people are saying we need metal detectors and a full fleet of cops are very school...forgetting how absurd that image is (do we really want THAT to be the new "normal"...)...how do you propose we afford that? hire more cops just to patrol schools...you're already cutting funding to schools and education. they barely have enough money for school supplies as it is...now you think we should allocate some of that money towards creating a special police force that JUST patrols schools? THAT is the best possible solution to all of this for some people? Do these people even listen to themselves?

That's actually the reality in my school district. The middle and high schools all have metal detectors and multiple officers in the schools, and after the sandy hook tragedy the elementary schools started doing the same.

The harsh truth is nothing can stop this, not a fucking gun ban, not fucking gun control, there's not a single thing you can do to stop people like this from killing people if they want to

but you can limit it. you can't stop anything. people still drive drunk, people still steal, people still do a lot of things....but we have laws in place that not only punish those who do wrong but also prevent others from doing wrong for fear of punishment. Do you think every single person who takes an uber home from the bar does so because they are morally obligated to do so? Not all of them...many of them do it because they're too afraid of getting caught and getting busted. in those cases the law helped LIMIT the number of people driving drunk...it doesn't stop it completely but it still does good.

lol at this post. This why my normal from 2005-2009 when I went to high school in the inner city. We had metal detectors and cops patroling the school. 2005 was way before the school shooting thing happened every other month like it does now.

how do you propose we afford that?

Increase the military budget. It should be 1 trillion, tbh.

cops are on the state's dime, funding for them comes with your property taxes

so your already high property taxes would get jacked up to double the police force (as well as more police cruisers, bigger HQ, pensions, etc) so we can have SWAT guys patrolling the halls of your 11 year old's middle school.

since restricting gun ownership is such an insane and irrational idea to americans, due to our desire to prove a point and/or shoot tin cans on a farm, this is likely our best option

What we need is more social nets that captures people before they feel the need to use a gun.
Which is of course costly and helping others counts as communism in USA which we have been drilled into believing is the worst thing since Hitler.

But why do people want to do this?
In the 80s, we had less than 4 school shootings per year on average.
Last year we had 9.
Find the common cause and try to eliminate it.
Yes, it wont stop every future shootings, but it will reduce them.

Mental health issues + easy access to guns

Neither of these issues seem like they'll be fixed, so this is only going to continue to be normalized.

So why do we have so many mental health issues now?
Did they raise or are the numbers the same? Did we discover them earlier in the past? What can be done to discover them earlier and/or prevent them from going crazy?

Ease of access is the main issue. Probably similar amounts in the past, but unable to see the signs, treatments, and lack of easy access to news and information makes it harder to report stuff.

Mental health problems are the way they are since they closed down the institutions. Now if we run into a mental health issue, they can be treated and held for 72 hours but then just released right after that. Unless they decide to bring institutions back, society has decided they are to be left on the streets or treated minimally.

what i don't understand is why people only look towards one solution when logically, there should be multiple checks in place to make sure these things don't happen.

take the flu, for example. you get vaccinated and wash your hands to make sure it doesn't happen. and then if it does get to you, you rest and take medicine for it so that it doesn't become something worse.

make sure they can't get their hands on a gun. if they can get a gun, make sure they don't take that gun to the school. if they take that gun to the school, be ready to stop them from shooting people until police get there.

people underestimate how effective the last part can be, also. as tragic as sandy hook was, there were many lives saved just because of the security of the school and how prepped the teachers were to deal with the event

So we got the same ammount of mental illness both then and now, and it was easier to get your hands on guns in the past.
Heck, the TEC-9 is much easier to hide, it got a bigger magazine than the AR-15 and while the effective firing range was much shorter, 160 ft is enough indoors. People loved it and it was used in multiple shootings, like Columbine.
And yet we had less shootings.
