So the story paints this picture that he was this well respected SOLDIER 1st Class and almost kind of a Celebrity known for his good deeds before we went insane full on murdering psychopath after discovering the Jenova Project.

But I wonder if there is any truth to that. Maybe he was always an asshole and the tales about him were exaggerations and he just got worse after the Jenova Project.

Crisis Core confirmed he was there and a major part of why their campaign was successful.

Plus he no doubt completed missions all over the world, saving people and killing monsters and stopping threats.

Based off the synopsis I've read for the game where you play as a Turk against the former leader of AVALANCHE, I'm pretty sure sephiroth helped with that as well at a point or two.

i don't think he was ever supposed to be portrayed or thought of as a hero, just as a really effective and skilled warrior/operative

There are some things laying around you can find where people are excited to hear Sephiroth was coming to town to handle a mission nearby.

What you don't find, however, is any indication of whether or not they were still happy to see him after he got there.
