It's because some people ciritized the level design in KH1 for being "too maze-like" in some areas like Deep Jungle where you're prone to get lost. So their solution was to make every world in KH2 hallways that led from point A to point B.
Of course, people complained about that, so they added in the Cavern of Remembrance to KH2FM, which had a shit-ton of platforming and stuff that was missing from the base game, and is arguably the best area in a KH game to date. DDD put things on the right track with bigger worlds that felt more expansive, but since there were 0 NPCs and hidden secrets like KH1 had, the worlds felt lifeless as hell.
