Horizon Zero Dawn for me. I was lookin forward to it on a gameplay and graphic basis, but I didnt have hopes for the story with Guerillas previous track record.

Then it went and made it into my top 10 games of all time.

If not that, then it would have been What remains of Edith Finch

Horizon is the most recent example of this. Furi is the one that blew my expectations out of the water the most though. Horizon I figured would be pretty good, I just didn't know how fantastic it was gonna be. Furi, I didn't really know if it was gonna be good or not, but now I point to the gameplay as some of the best I've ever played.

My hopes for Spirit of Justice was that it would be a decent Ace Attorney game, but I didn't have much hope for it doing anything much more impressive than Dual Destinies - it ended up blowing past my best case scenario and wound up being awfully close to my favorite AA game ever.

Breath of the Wild was kind of a zzz for me, there haven't really been any good Zelda games in a long time - I liked ALBW quite a bit, but there hasn't been another Zelda game that really captured my heart since Wind Waker. 3D Zeldas have been misses in particular for me, I just didn't like TP or SS so BotW was very much a 'wait and see' kind of thing. The fact that it was open world didn't help - I don't really like open world games, your Skyrims, etc, so I was just like eh between this being a 3D Zelda which isn't great news and being an open world game I doubt this'll be the game that changes my mind about either. It did. It totally did change my mind about both. BotW is one of the best games I've ever played.

Pathologic HD, pretty recently. I kinda expected the game to be too antiquated, flawed and frustrating, and that I'd quit after a couple hours. Ended up finishing it, and enjoying it quite a bit.

I think the most recent release was Horizon Zero Dawn as well, though.

Definitey BotW. I was excited to play it, but wasn't fully convinced they could pull it off. Ended up with the best open world game I ever played.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth I think. It was a lot more ambitious than I was expecting. Though lack of dub was still disappointing.

Skyrim I guess. I thought Morrowind absolutely sucked and people swear by that game. And I saw it played a bit on PS3 and it looked zzzz.

Skyrim on the PC with the right combat mods is a great time though.

Heh, funny enough I started playing Horizon again the last few days and thought about it as I entered this topic.

I figured it would be a fun experience with a basic story, but it ended up blowing me away on everything. Even story, which I don't usually care that much about, hit me on such an emotional level.

It's one of my comfort games now, I absolutely love being in Horizon's world, the land is so beautiful.

Plus the dlc answered my dreams of having a winter wonder land to explore, 10/10 game

If I'm being honest, Fire Emblem Heroes. Never expected to still be playing that a year later.

It's still not great but it's fun and has staying power and I didn't expect either.

Honestly Horizon did not meet my expectations. It's pretty good but the traversal and design of the world left me disappointed.

Celeste would be this for me. It seemed like it would be a straightforward, decent platformer and it ended up being one of the best I've ever played.

Dragon Quest Builders (didn't play it until the Switch release a few weeks ago). I went into it expecting something closer to Minecraft (which I didn't like), but I'm loving every second of it. My wife (and even 4 year old) are really into it as well.

Oh yeah I'll give a bonus shoutout to Danganronpa V3 - I thought the first two were okay but not great, and while the third one still had qualities that I didn't like, I thought it was a pretty great improvement and it was better than I was expecting. I liked it more than its equivalent in the Zero Escape trilogy, ZTD, which is a first!

I don't have time to play games for which I don't already have high expectations. >_>

Uncharted as a series. I went in expecting a fun adventure and did not expect to get even remotely as drawn into the story and characters as I did.

Yakuza 0 is exceeding all kinds of expectations for me. Thought the series was a slog (played 1, 2 and 3 before but never beat any of them). Everything from the main story to sub stories to mini-games is so much fun.

There're a few games I could point to... FF X's one of the most extreme examples I can think of, and I played that last year.

My experience with the series wasn't the best at that point, and X didn't sound so great based on what little I'd heard of it. Nowadays, I'd put it in my top five.

Miitopia. I was expecting a fun little fluff game that lasted a few hours. Instead it was a thoroughly enjoyable RPG with a surprisingly deep amount of content. I played it over 70 hours before I finally stopped doing post game side quests. The ability to choose Miis to be both party members and NPCs made it even more fun and personalized.
