Finished Chapter 9 and I am absolutely hooked to the story. The last few chapters were an edge-of-the-seat thrill ride to say the least. I can't wait to see where the story goes next. And holy **** Tachibana is the Bat Tatoo guy?What the **** does all this mean?.

I seriously can't believe I am having an absolute blast with a Yakuza game. After being the biggest fan of Shenmue, I played Yakuza 1 and 2 with very high expectations. Dropped both of them, a few hours into it because of excessive boredom. Yakuza 3 was just as bad and so I labelled the series, as not my cup of tea. I own Yakuza 4 as well but never tried that one. 5 being digital only didn't help matters and it is the only game in the series I don't own. Didn't think much of it then but I think I really want it now.

Yakuza 0 with all its raving critic and user reviews still kept me skeptical about ever playing it but now that I have, I didn't realize the series has evolved so much while ironically not changing the formula much at all. I guess polishing gameplay and its mechanics goes a long way in video games.

Unless the game implodes from here on out, it may just end up being one of my favorite games from 2017, the undisputed best year in gaming.

Was I really too hard on the first three games? Or is Yakuza 0 just too damn good in comparison? How is 4 and 5?

alternatively I've only played 1 and 2 and some of 3 and think they're all great so I assume when I get to 0 it'll be like my brain going to mush

4 and 5 are both great.

But I like all Yakuza games so kinda biased on that front!

But at least 4 and 5 include all the minigames 3 would have dropped.

They also lack the really slow start 3 has.

4 is a better Yakuza game than 5 in terms of story and encounters.

5 has a lot more gameplay variety but not all of these are to everyone's taste.

Well I guess if I ever play Yakuza 1 again in the future I'm gonna be playing the Kiwami version.

1 on the PS2 was just so boring after some time. The combat felt stiff and the story felt like it was going nowhere. Although the dub didn't bother me then, I'm pretty sure I'd be extremely bothered now after getting used to 0's awesome Japanese VA.

2, I hear is much better in comparison but I didn't play too much of it because 1 soured my taste on the series.

3, I've played a lot more than 2 and found it just as boring as 1. Being on the PS3, I thought maybe the series got better but nope

4 and 5, I haven't played for reasons stated above.

0 is the consensus best game in the series for a reason though, right? Because it is ****ing awesome so far.

Hell yes, Yakuza 0 is one of the best games ever made IMO. MGS used to be my favorite franchise, and after playing Y5 (and all prior Yakuza games) I was at a real tipping point. Yakuza 0 fucking smashed the scales in Yakuza's favor, it's just so good.

I honestly think all the games are great, though I agree playing 1 is... a little rough these days. I still think it's worth it because seeing these games evolve one after another is an incredible experience. If it's just too jank for you though, Kiwami is a very nice alternative.
