My brother is a retired Marine suffering from PTSD, and he has bouts of insomnia. Hes been living off of his VA disability for some time but its not enough. I just loaned him money to keep his water and electricity on.

His main concern is that with the insomnia, sometimes he might need a personal day to crash and sleep now and then, and on short notice. Basically, a job that is fairly lax/generous with sick time or personal days. Hes a hard, reliable worker but just needs someone understanding to accommodate his condition.

Hes not unrealistic, he knows a lot of companies dont want to deal with someone like that. But if anyone knows a good place to look or put in a resume, wed greatly appreciate any leads.

I mentioned Uber and Lyft, or maybe Rover. Problem being that he has a pickup truck. It is 4 doors but I dont know that Uber allows pickups. He doesnt need much money, just enough to live on. His VA disability covers most of his expenses, but he could probably use a couple hundred a week, maybe only $100 a week.

tl;dr - Brother needs recommendations for a job that will tolerate random, possibly frequent sick/personal days.

Uber allows trucks as far as I know. My buddy drove for them and has a pretty new Ram.

Amazon supposedly has veteran preference, but he would probably want to be in management to make it worth it. A guy I was in the army with worked there as a picker and he said it was the closest thing to legalized slave labor you could get to.

Thanks everyone. Forgot to mention he lives in North Carolina, east, near the coast. Not sure if there's an Amazon close to him but he can look into it.

NC has a job-matching system called NCWorks - depending on what county he's in, he should visit his closest NCWorks center. They have veteran priority of service, so he'll see a staff person right away and they might be able to find him a job that fits.

Huh. I work in a warehouse of a different company and it is a load of bullshit but we have a terrible time off policy. If you call in sick, you get an attendance point. If you get 11, you get fired. A point lasts for a year.

Amazon gives you a reasonable amount of time. Every three months you get 20 hours unpaid and you earn paid time during the first half of the year. Just don't ever let your unpaid time get below 0 hours or they'll fire your ass.

I've worked harder jobs in the past, and Amazon is probably the easiest I've had. Not a lot of people can hack it though, or figure out how to set a routine that you can comfortably make rate on. If you figure out how management typically operates and understand the concept of outrunning the bear its pretty chill with the exception of Prime Week and Peak.

Unless his truck gets absolutely crap gas milage, I'd recommend delivering pizza. You get tips every night, and ime, as long as you call ahead its generally not a problem if you call out ahead of time and let your boss know that you won't be able to make it to work. Also, its generally the fastest hiring process I've been through.

Anybody saying he should do security or be a bouncer mustve over read the person has PTSD from a WAR and they want to put him in situation where physical aggression or threats thereof are required for the job.

You dont want to trigger people like that. Thats how fights escalate into killings.

Combat vet and deputy here. PTSD isn't as dibilitabing as you think if he manages it. Not saying those jobs are right for him but the stigma about ptsd being an end all doesn't fit anymore.

I understand that.

It just goes to show the people heere dont know what they are talking about half the time.

Im not saying PTSD is a dibilitating condition, just there isnt any reason to put somebody in an environment with physical violence stressors when they have combat related mental health issues.

Yeah, my buddy was a security guard after being in special forces. There was a time where he yanked a gun out of a robber's hand and the dude was caught pretty off guard. He's got pretty serious PTSD and doesn't work any more though :/

Not to mention 99% of being a security guard is staring at a wall and possibly telling skateboarders to leave.

The remaining 1% is calling the cops.
