The only way were going to see the end of hijack mobile ads is if a third-party authority steps in and mandates the advertising networks rigorously police the content that gets put in. There is no incentive internally for ad networks to do anything about their lackadaisical vetting because they were already paid for the ad space.

Online advertising is intolerable because of how scummy it has become (annoyance and ostentatiousness are bad things but not something the government necessarily needs to regulate, even if the user experience is being stifled heavily by obnoxious ads). Dubious advertisers slipping in embedded code and forcing people to look at products without any way to decline is a violation of consumer rights and digital security, which is an arena the government is beholden to enforce.

On one hand I would like it if they did, on the other I am opposed to it on the principal that I believe in a free and open internet and I dont want the government policing content.

Same debate as the Patriot Act, ultimately: is the sacrifice of freedoms in the interest of security something we as a people can live with?

I personally am concerned just for the security issues that are prevalent with unmonitored advertising but the improvement of standards of advertising would be a nice side effect. Somewhere someone on the chain is just laying back and letting it happen and the end users pay for it with intrusive and possibly dangerous content being loaded on their devices.

i mean my first reaction is to say get an adblocker

but i'm sure the sheer amount of money that advertisers pay to get themselves in front of you is so huge that regulating it wouldn't be likely because i'm sure loads of these companies are shilling the FCC to keep that from happening

Corporal punishment would sort it out pretty fast. Just throw the top guy in the stocks and have somebody whip him a dozen times before a crowd of onlookers gets the green light to throw rotten food at his face.

This. Seriously, if the corruption investigation puts him in prison, that's the only way to even remotely salvage their reputation.

More and more websites aren't allowing you to browse them unless you turn off your AdBlocker. It's annoying since I never click on ads anyway. :/

This brings up a good point, while the FCC could potentially make predatory ads illegal, they'd more than likely make adblock software illegal without a permit. And you can't simply give a regulatory body limited power and expect it to stick, they can easily make a good case that they need more powers to effectively stop the problem

Adblockers would never be made illegal.
