I like Duke3D, but I don't know. Since you mentioned mods, it seems like you'd just be better off playing those. I'm usually pretty ambivalent towards mods and fan games; if it's a series I care enough about, I want the real deal, but I don't care that much about Duke... and it's not even the real deal, just a spiritual successor.

Also, who cares if it's a good or bad idea? I'm sure the game will be fine for what it is, won't be high-priced, and whatever risk it might be for the studio probably doesn't matter to you because nobody cares about 3D Realms anymore (who I honestly thought no longer existed... is this the real 3D Realms or just some completely rebuilt studio using the name, like Sierra?)

I'm looking forward to it, old school FPS is always good and I'd say they'll come up with someting nice, even with the old engine. It'll certainly run fast and smooth and on pretty much anything so speedrunners will be losing their minds.

Right, I got confused because I thought they didn't finish DNF. I was just reading about it, and I guess they indeed didn't finish it, but stayed in existence anyway? And apparently Gearbox owns Duke Nukem now, but 3D Realms kept trying to get into a bunch of failed lawsuits and even tried to make some Duke Nukem game they didn't have the rights to. Between all that and DNF's development hell, it sounds like these guys don't know what the hell they're doing.

I do think that 90's FPS level design didn't age well because they were very maze-like and it was very easy to get lost. Especially in Duke 3D.
However, that being said the linear corridor shooter was not an improvement. ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's not just the level design, but the lack of checkpoints that bugs me. Honestly I think I've only beaten Duke 3D on the XBLA version and N64 co-op, since those at least allow you to respawn in the middle of the level. For that reason I could never really get into Doom, but I'm not sure if there are versions out there with more forgiving respawns. Health is another thing that annoys me - I don't love regen mechanics (especially when the cover is too abundant), but being stuck at low health on a level mostly cleared of enemies sucks.
Half-Life 2 (and maybe the first Half-Life is like this, but I haven't played it) is the only FPS I've played that really nails the structure. You have health, but it seems to do a good job of dynamically giving you what you need and there are plenty of recharge stations. There are checkpoints, but the game is basically one continuous level, so it's understandable and not overly generous. The overall structure is linear, but there are little puzzles all over the place that don't involve esoteric keys and mashing the action button. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I don't remember it being like that. Maybe with an emulator, but that's not an actual part of the game... and can you emulate a PC game on PC? Actually, I bet that probably is a thing, especially with DOS games.
