The premise of the world of the dead is that someone in the world of the living has to remember you for you to exist. And if they put up your picture, you can visit the world of the living.

At the end, Miguel's great grandfather, Hector, is about to be forgotten and get lost. But when Miguel comes back to the world of the living, Miguel obviously remembers Hector... So why is it such a critical thing to have Coco, Miguel's grandmother, remember her own father?

Because he never met the guy. Someone you know must remember you. Or everyone could be there just from history books.
