Before I even proceed, this is not a troll topic, the events I am describing are entirely legitimate and honest to what's been happening here recently. This isn't some made up story, and I am not even claiming this to be paranormal, but it IS pretty damn creepy

So a part of the large complex I work at rents out cabins, there's 32 on the property. Cabin 443 has been down for a couple of weeks for maintenance on the bathroom and shower, basically a remodel. The property itself is historically dated back to 1890, and little is known about it's origins as it's a very small town. It's now a lodge/motel, restaurant, live music venue, and it's owned by the same person who owns a minor record label in Nashville.

So here recently, the front desk of the lodge lobby has been receiving calls from that cabin, on the phone display it tells you where the call is coming from. My wife is the lodge manager, and during her shift 3 nights ago, there were 20 calls from that room. Maintenance had cleared out at 5pm, and she even had security go check twice for squatters in the cabin that may be making prank calls. It's generally static noise when they pick up the line, or the line hangs up before the front desk answered.

The next day, the restaurant area, the manager's office, the accountant's office, and my office started receiving calls, about 3 or 4 times, all of us, during an 8 hour shift. Again, sometimes it will ring once or twice and hang up, sometimes it will ring until picked up, met by either silence, a dial tone, or muffled static. This occurred between 3pm and 10pm, maintenance was only there for 2 hours during the calls. There were no complaints from anyone staying at the other cabins or rooms receiving calls.

So first instinct is phone glitch, something in the lines is causing the room to call and contact other lines within the network. It's the logical way of thinking, and we called the phone company who came out yesterday, replaced the phone, and the jack, along with the wires to the phone. They did not physically rip out all of the lines in the walls or anything. They also checked the box outside to make sure the wiring was fine. It apparently looked good.

So all day today, it ceased. Everything was fine. Until the local police called. They received two phone calls from the cabin today, back to back that went to the 911 dispatcher. Both times, it was muffled static. They had to verify where the call was coming from, and the only records of a call from a cabin or room to an outside line and dialing 911 was cabin 433, as all outgoing calls are tracked for the sake of long distance charges to the room. The officer questioned if there was an emergency, and said they may have heard a voice on the line but no words were made out. We explained the situation the last few days, and even that we had the phone company out to work on the phones and the work they did do. This being a small town, and they likely get ten 911 calls a week max, and I know most of the officers on a first name basis. They basically said if one of our phones was dialing out to 911 automatically that it was an issue and they would like to come make sure no one is in the cabin and there were no issues. Aka, they were bored.

They showed up, and I provided the receipts for the work on the phone in that particular cabin the day before, and rental history of the last month as proof that this wasn't simply someone pranking and no one had stayed in the room, and they asked to go out and see it. I went out with them with the keys, and when we got there, the door was locked and secured, the windows were locked. Everything on the inside was normal. The place was clean, no obvious signs of anything but minor construction going on the past week or so. There aren't many places to hide. The officer disconnected the phone entirely from the wall, and we elected to leave it that way and go from there.

That's where my night left off. I guess i'll see what happens tomorrow.

Did they just eyeball the equipment, or did they run a full diagnostic like they are supposed to? Because to me, that sounds awfully like a short in the system.

That's my instinct also. There's 32 cabins, and 140 rooms, the offices, and that's just on the lodge property. I have no idea about phones, or lines, or how many are on how many networks or what it's even called, a switchboard? After replacing the basic stuff in the cabin, he was out by the box for nearly an hour. I didn't get exact details on the work, as we rarely have issues, I didn't inquire too much and assumed he was knowing what he was doing.

My cat has actually stayed overnight in one of the cabins with me and the wife, because he didn't want to be left alone during a snow storm. (Real reason was we had no power and it was 5 degrees outside and didn't want the cat to get too cold there alone). He napped by the fire and seemed content.

It falls in line with the room numbers, which are strange also. They start at 100 to 145 then 200 to 245. The other building is smaller, the rooms run from 300 to 324 then 400 to 424. Cabins start at 425 and run up to 457.

They said static, and a voice was possible but they didn't really work out a word. I don't know if one officer listened to it once, or multiple times, or what.

I've had some experiences that i've posted about, i'm also involved with a community that developed 15 years ago and has turned into a 2 hour talk radio program weekly that broadcasts in NYC, New Orleans, and parts of Missouri. It's something i've taken an interest in since my experiences, especially when I was younger. I find it all intriguing, which is why this experience (although I think it's just a technical problem) has interested me in the past few days.

I'm assuming you read all of what I posted, if the problem persists, I'm going to look into directly investigating this, the direct line and the box it connects to, and potentially replacing all of it if needed. You are right, if this continues and the local dispatch keeps getting calls from our location and it isn't an emergency, I can see them getting irritated fast, regardless of our relationship with them. I'd like to think they will be understanding for the moment as they know what's going on and the town population here is under 1,000. It's a lot of travelers and nothing more, except wilderness, so they aren't exactly tied up with work either. Regardless, they likely don't appreciate the calls if they keep going.

Now what is strange to me, if it was calls within the location, calls that don't require the "99" dial out code to outside lines, it would be more easy to believe it was electrical or a problem with the line.

The fact that the phone has to dial "99" and then 911 to reach an outside line is perplexing. With the dialing out, it's no longer contained within the same circuit, or whatever it is. It's no longer calling lines solely on the property that are connected at the same location.

Like I can pick up the phone and dial "120" and it goes to room 120. Same with my extension, a simple 3 digit number. It's the same formula with all extensions on the property.

I'm not an electrician, or know anything about phone lines, but what would make it call out and then dial 911 seems very strange.

Reminds me of something that happened at my work. I was working in an office building in the middle of the night and police called the lobby phone saying they got a 911 hangup call from one of the office floors. There wasnt anyone up there so we sent someone up to check. The police dispatch lady called the number back so that we could hear which office the call came from, but they couldnt hear it.

Either the call just wasnt coming through or the security guards were just fucking inept idk, but after a while the lady started getting a busy signal, then it started going through again.

I suppose that's true, but that many calls over the duration of 3 days, after the company was out to check it out, and the box being relatively close to the road and definitely within view of a lot of people in the parking lot seems unlikely. Again, i'm no electrician, nor do I know anything about how phones and lines work, so it definitely could be the case.
