Here's a little back story.

I do contracted armed security at a municipal court. We've had this contract for 10 years. When the contract started, the pay was $12/hr, it is now $12.95. So in a decade, they've given less than a dollar. The court pays my company 120k a year for two guards. Our company barely pays us 30k.

This was the first armed site in my area, which is why I think the rate is so low. There are now multiple armed sites that are paying $15. Hell, there are even unarmed sites making $14.50.

Our contract renews every May, so I'm trying to bring it up beforehand.

I'm never late, I've called off one time in the FIVE YEARS I've been here.

Not gonna ask for anything crazy, just what's to get paid what the other armed site should are.

Any tips? Email? Call? If I want to talk face-to-face, I have to take a personal day.

what is your employment status like, for example does your role personally renew on a yearly contract? this sounds like kind of a sketchy situation tbh

Only $13 an hour for armed security? That doesn't sound like a lot for someone expected to stop an active shooter.

It's incredibly common unfortunately. Contracted security can be very unfair to the guard.

Over 5 years now, but my company has had the contract for 10.

I asked for a raise and my boss said he would discuss it three months later, I followed up with him and he ignored me.

A few months after that I started looking for new jobs, and I am assuming that one of the potential new employers contacted him about me because out of nowhere he gave me a major raise and a giant retention bonus.

So basically my only advice is look for the old diagonal promotion, raises don't happen these days, start applying for higher paying jobs.

Do it face to face.

And as clearfragrant said, look for employment elsewhere to perhaps push them into looking into giving you a raise.

Yeah I can look around. I'm hoping everything works out, I really like the site I'm at.

But yeah I can imagine doing it in person helps.

Find a new job and if you do, don't bank on that leverage to get a raise with your current job. Some employers will wheel and deal, others will say don't let the door hit you.

Face to face, ask your boss for some one-on-one time

Do some research beforehand as well to see what similar positions in your area are making

or get a promotion, i mean you've been doing what you've been doing for five years, can you go up at some point?

You need leverage. find a new job, go to your boss and say I've been offered this job, it pays me (10% more than what you were offered), can you match it?

If yes - great payrise
If no, but we can give you (what your new job offered) - payrise you wanted anyway
If no, get fucked - leave and go to your new job, get payrise anyway

Gonna miss this 5 minute commute and schedule. 730-430p M-F, all federal holidays off. All other sites I worked at were swing or third shift, and far away lol.

Two methods, straight up ask or start looking for a higher paying job and if you succeed tell your boss you got a better offer and if they can't match it or better you might have to put in your two weeks
