Whether it be a video game, tabletop, or otherwise, what do you like to play as?

Whenever you decide to play an RPG, or really any game with a class system, what class/playstyle do you like?

Do you like it because of the lore or concept, or just because you enjoy the playstyle or power progression?

For me I'm definitely a fan of the paladin. Or really any kind of off-tank support type (Magic Knight from Dragons Dogma, Man-at-arms from Divinity, etc). I feel a little more adaptable/useful than if I'm a pure support, and I still get to enjoy a little bit of healing or buffing.

I'm also a sucker for playing characters with good morality so it just naturally works out that way.

Wizard over Paladin over Ranger / Rogue

I prefer mage classes in a lot of games given the versatility and damage potential but, in titles with a lot of exploration (like the Elder Scrolls game), I tend to default to rogue-like gameplay. Paladins are kinda neat for mixing melee, healing, and some amounts of magic.

I'm currently going through my first ever run. I started as deprived lol I am gravitating towards heavy armor and gratshields. My main weapon is the brigand axe. Side weapons are artos's spear and arbalest right now. I also use the clerics chime for regeneration. But I mainly fight with my axe and stone greatshield.

Yeah, lockpicking is a useful skill since a lot of cool stuff is hidden behind locked doors and, in some cases, it saves you the trouble of hunting down a key you might otherwise need. Plus stealth lowers the chance that you'll be ambushed while exploring and, thanks to damage buffs on stealth attacks, you can sometimes clear entire areas without taking any damage (or just avoid hostile NPCs entirely)

It generally means Thieves/Ninjas, so yes, Assassins included.

I usually gravitate towards Rogues and Wizards (Mages) depending on the game. Occasionally I'll use Barbarians depending on their speed and damage output.

In a nutshell, I have a natural selection for Sweepers.

I'm not sure if the term is correct but a Spellblade (knight and mage hybrid), basically an armoured warrior who can competently use magic but is most proficient in melee combat.

And no, typical paladins are restricted to holy magic but are useless in terms of offence in most cases which gravitates them to being tanks.

Spellblade, Mage Knight, Red Mage, Magus, etc. There's plenty of ways to describe that kinda class, so there's no problems.

If I had to break it down I'd say Mage Knights are Off-tank dps and Paladins are Off-tank support/Full-tank.

Try telling that to the players from Critical Role:

http://orig00.deviantart.net/926d/f/2017/280/0/8/counterspell_by_pettyartist-dbpvftm.png

Their Bard is pretty much the only reason they didn't end that campaign with a massive TPK. Not to mention the dozen or so TPKs he prevented long before they ever made it that far. He was easily the most effective and useful party member they ever had.

As a man who grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons, Matt told Sam, and continuously being told that bards were the worst class, and charisma was a dump stat, and fighting that because I knew the potential for storytelling with that kind of a character I am so thankful that you stepped up to the challenge of worst character and worst race and shown just how amazing it can be.

Depends on the genre.

I love archer classes in MMORPGs, namely Lineage II. I played a Dark Elf Archer for years. I'm not very fond of melee classes, though I admit they're more fun sometimes, especially for AOE grinding.

When it comes to MOBAs, I prefer casters/mages.

And regarding traditional RPGs, I like Rogue classes when they have some sort of special attribute regarding looting, like thieves being able to steal from enemies and stuff.

I tend to play melee classes, although I have no preference about which in particular. I've played a rogue before, so I could assassinate my enemies, I've played a fighter and barbarian and acted as the tank, and I've also played monk. In the campaigns I'm currently playing (d&d 3.5) I'm playing a Barbarian/Wizard Goliath in one (DM forced me to take Wizard, to get the aid of an old and powerful Wizard I had to become their apprentice). A swordsage/warblade Lizardman in another. A homebrew race called Draconian who's a Monk, and in the last campaign I'm currently playing (lots of homebrew in this one) I'm playing a half-ogre Witcher (yes, it is based on the Witcher series).

^.^ As a vague general tendency, I lean toward ...

Tabletop RPG? Fighter.
Simple and straightforward and lets me concentrate on paying close attention to what's going on in the adventure, instead of being required to research all of the permutations of the hundreds of spells, all while the other players are waiting for me to continue and getting impatient. -.-;;;

MMORPG? An additional cleric.
Other players are usually quite grateful to get healed ^.^
and parties are usually formed impromptu on the spot, instead of a scheduled in-person meeting of real people. Meaning that if I need to duck away for a while, I can, without interrupting the adventure for others.

Computer RPG / console RPG, if it's a one-character game?
Fighter-cleric (similar to paladin except not limited to being lawful-good), fighter-mage, or fighter-cleric-mage.
Of course, paladin in those games where that's just used as a synonym for fighter-cleric, instead of implementing the alignment restrictions too.

For decades i specialized as a non tank melee DPS in every game i played. To this day it is still my beginning class for all games i play. High damage and low or middling defense, would probably make for a traditional barbarian class. Now i gravitate towards ranged DPS and minion classes. Like the WoW hunter and warlock, or summoners in FF14. The conjuration tree in Skyrim. Good times.

That was an awesome read. Thank you for sharing. I forgot which game it was, maybe Pillars of Eternity? where you can indirectly have a party of bears via one class that can summon/befriend them.

On another note, I kinda feel compelled to replay Baldur's Gate II again after reading this topic. It was a slow start but once I got it going my thief/mage was nigh unstoppable. Kinda curious how a cleric/mage class would work.

Yeah now I'm itching to play a good RPG after not playing games for a while. It's great to see everybodies rationale and little stories. Like playing a role for decades takes significant dedication.

Everytime I come back the votes change significantly though. Last time I checked the standard trio (Wizard, Fighter, Rogue) was in the lead, but I just checked again and Paladin is right up there with them. It's interesting though because not that many of my fellow paladins actually posted in this topic.

Monk got some appreciation too, but still no love for Druid haha.

I think you mean a Paladin.

Magic Knights use sword and shield too, but their spells are usually offensive or elemental spells, and sometimes they have crowd control effects. At least in the games I've played like Disgaea for example, so take it with a grain of salt.
