I've recently gotten into photography and I bought the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT on a whim:

This thing is really complicated... anyone have any beginner's tips, or a good starting point, before I start Googling and (perhaps) spiraling down the wrong path?

Will you actually use it?

I hope so. In sunny/overcast situations, the subject gets really harsh shadows, so I always wanted a flash for outdoor portrait photography. But because of the high cost, I never got into it. I saw this Speedlite for $350 at a pawn shop I frequent, and I bought it for $300.

But I know nothing of flashes.
