By the way I'm just going to point out that building muscle does reduce fat.

Your body has to work harder to maintain bigger muscles so it burns excess fat to do so.

Or it just burns the muscle instead. But work hard enough and get enough protein and youre safe, so its still a great way to increase your TDEE (Too bad you cant know how much muscle you have unless you find out your body fat %, which is easier said than done.)

Your body will always burn the fat BEFORE your own muscle. Even on non workout days just make sure you meet your daily macro requirements with the priority obviously being protien.

This is not true.

Most people burn muscle first without exercise and proper eating.

It's the proper nutrition part. Get your required protien and hit your macros on non workout days

Different rules apply if you don't ever workout but you didn't have any muscle to lose anyways

A lot of people who diet lose muscle first because they cut too many calories and too much protein.

That's valid but the point is if you're worried about keeping muscle mass while dieting it's not rocket science. How do all those body builders who bulk in the off-season and build muscle but also put on body fat, turn around and cut body fat yet keep muscle?

Cut calories but hit your damn macros.

Is this a good place to post stuff about starting to work out? I'm fat and out of shape, but I bought a gym membership yesterday and just started doing a little bit.

Background: I've been mostly sedentary for quite a while. I'm also diabetic, which means I should have been exercising for that reason alone. I've just finished my master's degree, and I figured with the extra time I'd finally do something about it. Enter a nearby 24 hour gym, $20 a month.

Since I'm in pretty bad shape, I figured I'd start by doing some basic walking on treadmills. I did 20 minutes yesterday and worked my way up to 3 MPH, and I did another 20 minutes today at 3.2 MPH. Today was a little uncomfortable, so I figure I'll stay at that speed and just increase the length of my walks for the next little bit.

More the merrier.

I was sitting at 242-243ish the past 3 days which is a weight gain. Today I am 237. Which makes more sense with where I was trending.

This is a weight loss topic but I doubt TC will care, your plight is still related to fitness. Anywho, what are your goals? If its to lose weight, fix your diet before anything. Diet is 80% of weight loss as they say, and for good reason. Exercise doesnt burn that many calories, so if you treat youreself or eat more because youre hungry from working out then youre probably regaining the calories and then some.

Main goal is weight loss. Secondary is getting into some physical condition where I'm not easily winded from short runs.

I've made some dietary changes already. I mostly drink water, which was a change from drinking diet soda. I've made an effort to incorporate more protein into my diet in order to curb cravings that would ordinarily lead to eating a candy bar or something equally bad for me (I mainly opt for pistachios at work). Work is a more controlled environment, so if I plan things in advance then I can do ok. Evenings and weekends have proven challenging, and I'm open to suggestions on how to avoid loading up.

I mean, I would suggest not eating for 24-48 hours forcibly to reset your internal clock for hunger. This will make your stomach shrink some (why you should never do this in order to save up to eat more for an all you can eat thing) and when you eat you will feel full faster. Eating slower is a key also.

After you do that initial fast, just stick to the calorie limit you set and you should feel full and set your internals to being okay with that amount.

I suggest giving up chips and candy, and all drink calories across the board.

I occasiaonally will drink some beer or some Gatorade but otherwise am completely ice water. Lemon water if I want a little taste.

234.8 today. Going with 239 as official weight for now. Think I am seeing some fools gold on the scale.

Btw it is so annoying trying to estimate calories. For example, yesterday I ate 4 tacos total for dinner. Homemade tacos. When I calculated it, I was somewhere like 2000 calories for the day. I think I am overestimating calories on a lot of days, but I dunno.

It is hard to have accurate estimates when you are not the one making the dinner.

I am not doing a keto diet, but my urinalysis for my physical detected ketones in my urine. *Shrug*

So I mentioned that a few weeks ago I had a ton of food and a lot of it was food that has tons of sugar and fat (a lot of dairy through milk and ice cream, chocolate, butter, pudding, etc). I was 155 by the end of that week.

This morning I am down to 148.8. Woot.

Don't need to go really any lower obviously, but I like to stay right around/maybe just below 150

I reduced the speed on the treadmill to 3 MPH, but I increased the incline by a tiny bit (I don't know if the measures are in degrees or units, but I changed it to 1.0). I went for 30 minutes this time, helped by the TV show Chopped (something on the Food Network). It's nothing impressive, but it is improvement.

I would recommend to those doing exercise to try strength training. Mix it in with your walking. Honestly walking isn't much of a workout, jogging is where the heart really starts pumping and your body starts burning calories. But you could probably drop just like $20 on two 10 pound dumbbells or $25-30 on two 15 pound dumbbells and do a few exercises with them the right way for x amount of reps. Get your arms tired and then push them a bit further. It does help with losing weight.

They've got machines at the gym. I could probably work with those, and maybe some basic floor exercises to go with it. The walking is just to get me started so I don't get a heart attack or anything by starting too fast.

How bad of shape are we talking here?

Repetitions of light-moderate weights that don't really strain you until you've done 20+ reps probably isn't gonna be enough to send you into a heart attack, but I say this as someone with a very able and working body, so maybe I don't really know what it might do to someone else.

Gonna swim tonight after work; might bike to work Friday. I've been kinda mopey and sleepy but having something to look forward to doing is helping me exercise. Losing weight is fine and all but really I just want to be capable of things. I don't want to be lazy. I want to be able to go on a "fun run" and not have that totally kill me.

I get winded after running a short distance or climbing a couple of flights of stairs. I'm not on death's door, but I'm not a spring chicken and I'm concerned that I might overdo it.

I wasnt as big as everyone here (185 highest), but I still had no athletic ability to speak of (Got winded climbing a few flights of stairs) so I understand your concern. I still fear overdoing it, but Ive found that my body is much stronger then I give it credit for. Believe in your body. If you dont push yourself, you wont grow.

I tried using an elliptical machine today. I don't think I managed 90 seconds before my quads were screaming in pain. It was certainly an embarrassing introduction, although it wasn't unexpected (my dad had told me about his experience with it).

After sitting down for a few minutes, I went back to the treadmill. It would have gone ok, except that my shoe kept coming untied. After ten minutes and three pauses, I gave up on tonight's endeavor. Google provided some suggestions on keeping my shoes tied, so maybe it'll work better tomorrow.

I'm not trying to be mean but lots of people don't like exercise. I have come to love cardio but it took time. Most of all its hard work. If being fit was that easy we all would be.

You can't ever be mad at your current situation if you come up with excuse after excuse for failure.

You think people who are in amazing shape love having restricted diets? Love killing it in the gym everyday? No. But they do it. They have the willpower to change their lives for something they want.

You don't seem like you really want it honestly.

So not only do you need to lose the weight for general health, but you have a serious medical condition which you could greatly improve by losing weight.

You have all the motivation in the world yet you refuse to put in effort because it's boring or uncomfortable??

I just don't see how you expect support in a thread about weight loss where you blatantly tell people you decide to put no effort in because it's not fun?

I'm on your side dude my other post was trying to motivate you before you brought up anything medical. Once you learn that your health is at SERIOUS risk if you don't put some effort and willpower into something does that not motivate you?

Your own mortality? A fate of ill at the hand of none other than yourself?

Fine. It's only been about a week and a half since I started, and I'm not in great shape. Give me some time.

Back on topic. I tried the elliptical machine again, and I made a modest gain of 30 seconds before my legs were in pain. I'd read somewhere that you can work different muscles by going backwards, so I tried that. Didn't last 10 seconds. I suspect it'll be a while before I can put any serious time on one of those.

Spent some more time on a treadmill. I boosted the speed a tiny bit as I went along, and that helped with the boredom.

Get an exercise bike and play video games while u bike. Listen to music or watch TV or movies while on treadmills.

Been at a convention all weekend but I haven't cheated at all. Looking forward to checking the scale tomorrow.

It's fucking hot where I am as well. 2 weeks ago we had sweaters and jeans on. Now I'm in shorts, no shirt, and burnt to shit. Sweating my balls off outside at work.

Welcome to Canada

Up to 3.5 MPH on the treadmill, which is a nice, quick walk. I started cramping a bit after 15 minutes, so I'm going to work on that speed for a while.

You think people who are in amazing shape love having restricted diets? Love killing it in the gym everyday? No.

In my experience most do. I cant speak for them, but for me I love the release of endorphins I get whenever I exercise, I love when I make healthy choices because I know Im improving my body. I had to learn to love it, but once I did everything became so much more easier. Not to say youre wrong though, I got the underlying point. However I felt I needed to add that, since fitness isnt a chore for everyone.
