I interviewed with and got an offer from a company in atlanta, ga to become an ESOP pension admin. I currently make 55k in northwest NJ, and the offer is 63k + $2500 expense account for relocation. what are the ways to counteroffer?

this was done through a recruiter as well - he said initially that they were saying 60k + nothing for relocation and he pushed. then he came back and said 63k + $2500. do you think I could push for a higher salary still?

in addition to that, important to me is my family. my new nephew was just born 2 days ago and it would suck not to be in his life as much. but I think this opportunity is great too because it should open up many more doors later in life - good ESOP people are not plenty, so embedding myself in this niche will make me more desirable

darkman's opinion was to ask for a $10k raise and no expense account.

what does the rest of CE think?

Not knowing enough about the people who are planning to employ you I'm hesitant to offer any actually useful advice.

Really the only thing I can say is good on your for knowing your worth and expecting more. I love the saying "You don't get it if you don't ask for it." Lotta truth to that statement.

you can definitely push for a higher salary
I think it's a good idea to waive the expense account to get a higher salary, especially if you can afford to move

talked to the recruiter and I think we're going to shoot for the extra without waiving the expense

tbh that is also nice because the expense account is untaxed and should hopefully allow me to use it for like a month of rent

rent in dunwoody is much cheaper than here

Get all that you can from those bastards. Soon as you're hired they're going to start twirling you around like a fuckin baton. So you better make it worth it.

thanks folks and true that @Johnny_Nutcase, I'm expecting that. I'm taking this as a good interim step, plus the money I'll be earning even if they don't budge goes a lot farther than it would if I stayed up here earning the same salary. pretty excited, I will prob spend a good bit on a 1b1br apartment too because why not

seems reasonable so long as the raise is in writing.

yep, I'm waiting for the written letter before I give my notice or anything

speaking of that, how does one go about giving their notice?

two weeks is the traditionally 'respectful' way to do it

but many companies will just terminate you immediately if they dont expect to have work for you over that period

third party administration on the ESOPs for these clients. I'm going to learn more when I get there because I currently have zero experience with it >_>

thanks man, I got the offer letter now. I have a few things to clarify but I have it signed and dated, ready to be scanned and sent once I'm satisfied. I was thinking of living in dunwoody or alpharetta. where do you live and what are your suggestions regarding housing?

Well I live at a Condo in Midtown. I make less than you'll be making but I pay ~$950/mo for where I live. Nice area but some of the highrises get ridiculously high priced. I got lucky on mine.

That being said, and this is heavily up for debate for people who live here...but I've always been told to stay above this line:

excHJia

If you're shooting for dunwoody or alpharetta, you're in good hands. The morning commute traffic will suck though, if you're driving into ATL via 85/75.

Buckhead is rich people land.
Decatur is really nice in most parts of it, especially Druid Hills, but has some sketch areas.
Brookhaven is okay.
Smyrna is also really nice, and affordable.
Virginia Highlands is nice but mid-range expensive.

thanks for the info bud. luckily the office is in sandy springs/dunwoody but it seems like the traffic from alpharetta to dunwoody is pretty shitty too lol. alpharetta was suggested to me by @MacadamianNut3 and it seems like there's a lot to do there so I may just go there, but dunwoody looks good too

hehe xd

Oh it's near downtown. Well if you do that, you'll be driving in the opposite direction of traffic to and from work so that would be convenient
