New girlfriend has just moved in and hates my cat. Suggests getting it declawed as it scratched her the other day. Is it worth it for the cat? He does scratch the doors sometimes which is annoying. I dont want to piss of my girlfriend so if its faorly painless will just get it done.

Don't do it. Seriously, look it up, it's not good for the cat

Ask your girlfriend if she's like her fingernails permanenty removed (which is probably even still not the same)

IIRC declawing a cat is roughly equal to cutting your top knuckle off each of your fingers

dont do it

Get a scratching post or something similar and you can train them to do all their scratching there

How do you train a cat to use a scratch post. I might suggest that first but will see what my girlfriend says.

Essentially just put it up near where they like to scratch and reward them for using it while discouraging them from scratching where you don't want (I used a spray bottle)

Just buy one that would be appealing for a cat to a scratch and that's most of it (you can also use positive reinforcement with treats). Don't buy one of those shitty lightweight 1 foot tall ones. Cats want something they can stand up against and put their weight on, that's why couches tend to be appealing. You can get a good scratching post for around $40, I can try to find the one I bought off of Amazon.

You can but those cat towers from meijers. I got one and my cat uses that. I would never put her through unnecessary surgery that is so painful.

Maybe the gf could just stay away from the cat.

No, the cat was there first.

My girlfriends know that my dog is a package deal. My ex tried to suggest that I get rid of my 5 year old Corso because she is scared of big dogs and I was like "Oh well, tough shit...the dog stays".

Just asked my vet friend.

Don't declaw your cats. You're taking away a huge component of their natural behaviour. It affects their ability to climb and stabilise themselves on surfaces, as well as them scratching being normal behaviour, and if they cant express normal cat stuff then it makes them incredibly stressed.

It also removes the actual finger tip so causes quite a lot of pain and problems following surgery and can even cause chronic pain but we have no way of accurately telling in our own cats.

They also may get fear aggression because they can't defend themselves so will be more likely to resort to biting if you put them in a position they can't avoid.

Now you know.
