I played it competitively for a few years, so I don't think so.

Depends on what, if you mean gameplay-wise then maybe, if it's story then yes, and if you mean successful financially then no, and if you mean as an e-sport and active playerbase then definitely yes (but that's mainly due to competition from other games).

The story was so boring/cliche/silly. It felt like playing WoW in some parts. SC1 wasn't the epitome of originality, but the story had a nice "we are at war!" pace to it, instead of the "let's go farm 10 monsters to power up!" vibe of SC2.

As for MP, it had potential, but they threw it away. It took a really long time for them to acknowledge some of the original balance issues, creating a community culture of "You only win because imba!" that could have been avoided (or at least mitigated). Afterward, their answer to balancing anything was to make it as boring as possible. So few units had anything more than "attack at range X, but with an upgrade, you can attack at range X + 1! OMG OMG OMG". I stopped playing multiplayer when I realized Heart of the Swarm added almost nothing "fun" to units beyond more number crunching.

If it got better with Legacy of the Void, I'd like to know.

Yeah... the biggest turn off for me was a dog shit campaign. They said they were spreading it out to make it better, but, surprising nobody, it became a watered down cash grab.

they took too long in between chapters. I'm surprised I even played the second part, and couldn't be bothered to play the third part. they should have actually released the full game all at once, but I guess we can't do that anymore these days.

That and the costs for the expansions were full game prices

I still haven't bought legacy of the void...

definitely, although it's basically a thankless journey trying to make a sequel to the most accidentally perfect game of all time
