I've trained in boxing, judo, brazillian jiu jitsu, and boxing. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. You meet a lot of great people, and you become really comfortable moving your body.

Muay Thai most recently. Trained like a Thai (6 hours per day, 6 days per week) and fought twice. Have been doing it on and off for about 4 years now. Haven't trained in 5 months because of a torn mcl from a motorcycle accident, hoping to get back to the gym in April.

BJJ. Trained for a year, was a two stripe white belt but gave it up because it was too hard on my back and I preferred striking over grappling.

Tae Kwon Do as a kid.

I did wrestling in high school until my arm got bent backwards and I messed up a tendon and got cartilage damage in my elbow. Prior to that I was in a kids' judo class lol

My dad has been a black belt in aikido for like 20 years though and teaches it for a hobby. He's not somebody to fuck with :P

I did MMA for a few years a while back. I specialized in muaythai, karate, and taekwondo. (Hated floor stuff like BJJ and other grappling, not a fan of having other dudes asses in my face)
I did a few fight shows, was 1-2 in actual contested fights. The shows themselves werent technically sanctioned though cuz UFC/MMA wasn't legal here at the time, so they were all just held at gyms and stuff.

I stopped doing it for a long time, but last year I got back into it slightly with one of those kickboxing fitness classes (A legit one, not the shitty wimpy ones where you don't even have bags) though I have no plans on fighting anymore, just doing it for fun and exercise, and cuz I convinced my girlfriend to start as well let. She really enjoys it too, so it's a fun way for us to stay in shape.

Blow job jujitsu? When I was 13 I wrestled a 17 year old girl and sadly it didn't end that way.

When i was a kid i learnt some Taido, and looking back at that its fucking useless and very silly looking martial arts style.

Then i started Taek Kwondo which was better but i didn't feel like going there for too long.

I don't think they give you actual protection, unless you really train them hard for years and years. For self defense i guess boxing and jiu jitsu and such are the top ones.

now, aside from actual usefulness they are actually fun to train with other people. Every time people who wants to learn martial arts have been very friendly and social people. I think that is kinda universal regardless of the country.

I did BJJ for a few months.

I loved it but I sadly couldn't keep up with payments nor did I have the free time it takes to actually really develop and get good at it.

It is exhausting. Even if you're fit you will be exhausted the first few times you go just because you'll be so tense the whole time. But it's amazing and fun.

If you're looking for a martial art that actually teaches you stuff that would help you win in a no rules fight BJJ, MT, Boxing, MMA, or Krav Maga are probably your best bets. They're also the most expensive for that very reason.

Muaythai is honestly the most applicable for self-defense/fighting real people. Average shmuck on the street isn't even aware you can throw knees/elbows as an attack, let alone how to defend against them. And if you don't know how to defend, lol, well-placed elbow is gonna drop most average people on the ground in one blow.

yeah, and elbows can do pretty nasty damage, and you feel barely any pain, even if you hit bone against bone, compared to punching.

Muay Thai and boxing are the best choices for a real world situation. While being able to choke a guy unconscious with ease is great, getting kicked in the head by one of his friends while doing it isn't.

Muay Thai will teach you how to fight at range and in tight. Leg kicks and/or combined with clinch knees and elbows will end most fights with an untrained person quickly.

OP, don't train this kind of McDojo nonsense. You'll just get a shin slammed into your chin while acting like a goofy jackass in the crane stance or some equally garbage stance.

Though Silat is at least legit, basically Muay Thai with more emphasis on punching and elbows than kicks and knees in Muay Thai. Just avoid any of the East Asian traditional martial arts, there is a reason almost no elite fighters train those styles (some karate guys but most karate is point sparring garbage).

Maybe if your only goal is to learn to fight primarily. By far the biggest benefit I've found in martial arts has been to finally learn my body and how it can move. It also teaches the discipline required to make it move the way you want it to, which actually helps in almost any walk of life.

Funny story about martial arts.

My sister (3 years younger) did karate when we were growing up. Once she got her junior black belt, I thik she was 13 and I was 16, I asked her if I could throw a punch at her and for her to show me how she'd block it (I was asking about real-life application of karate etc). I asked my parents and my sister if it was okay, and they said it was fine.

I stood facing her in a boxing stance (it's all I knew), and she got into position. I asked her about 3 times "Are you ready? Are you ready? Are you sure?" and then threw a punch. Not a lightning fast, as quick as I could punch, but just threw a slow jab. I was expecting her to either dodge or grab it.

Instead, I popped her right on the nose, and she started screaming and blood was everywhere. I turned to my parents and kind of shrugged my shoulders and said "I asked! I asked 3 times if she was ready!" and were like "yeah... you did".

She ran off crying to her room. Funny as. I tell that story about twice a year.
