a little into disc 3 (i just got rinoa back), i'm still enjoying the story but i don't know about the battle system. the fault probably lies on my end rather than the game's as there's probably a lot i'm not getting, as my fights just end up with me spamming GF's until I win, or until I get silenced and I have to esuna with a different character

but i'm pretty sure the problem's on my end. when i beat the game i'm gonna ask around/read up on how to actually play this game, cause i have a feeling that the way i'm doing it just isn't right

down to 1 boss in ultimecia's castle, i'm actually really liking it. it's fun to explore, the painting puzzle was really well done, and i'm guessing the last boss probably has something to do with the piano

my guesses for the solution progressed in this order:
1. i should match the small paintings to see what they have in common with the big one. since the big one has a road on the right side with trees next to it, for example, then xystus (tree-lined road) would be one of the answers
2. i noticed the clock and that it was 8:20. i didn't notice the seconds hand for a while so i tried a bunch of random stuff
3. after i noticed the seconds hand was on 6, I knew the three numbers were 8 (VIII) 4 (IV, although it looked like the clock says IIII) and 6 (VI). so my thought process was that i had VIII, IV, and IIII, since that's what the clock looked like, so I had to find three words that combined to have 2 V's and 8 I's
4. after messing around with that a while, i started to look at each word on each painting and realized that taking the first V, I, or X, or combination of them led to the word making up one of the roman numerals on the clock. and thus the riddle was solved

Yeah, I like Ultimecia's Castle a lot. It's a fun and well designed dungeon.

Depends if you believe the fan theory he dies from the ice shards and everything after is the after life or not.

my friends brought up this post after i beat it. it sounds like it was shot down by the designers but man, the story just seemed to abandon some things and kinda make up things out of thin air

i'll come up with "official" ratings after thinking about it for a couple days to put on our spreadsheet, but my immediate reaction:

that the gameplay is really good. they tried something new and obviously it took me a while to figure out, but i like it. zell's probably one of my favorite FF characters, his limit break was a lot of fun to use. i never got into the card game but it actually seems pretty cool and sounds like it's one of the more popular parts of the game.

the story.... eh. like seifer just did a career change from knight to fisherman? i'm still assuming he was brainwashed, why was that never addressed? obviously i missed my prediction on him joining the party but man, so much happened off screen lol. i'm a big fan of romance in jrpg's (there's a reason i really like xenogears), but this game really forced it and i couldn't really get into it. i absolutely loved the flashbacks to laguna and the rest but it felt like more could've been done, you get these flashbacks and then you officially meet him and that's it.

the music is okay, some good songs but i don't know if i'd consider any of them especially memorable, but i think that has more to me just not getting into the story

i've heard a lot of people say really good things about the OST so i'll blame myself for not liking it. like i said earlier it probably has a lot to do with me just not getting fully invested in the story

the "theory" is just funny given all the stuff that seems to completely drop off after disc 1. seifer/rinoa's love history, the backstory for selphie/zell/quistis/irvine, etc. i actually really like squall's character development where learns gradually to rely on his friends and trust them rather than hold everything in. i can appreciate how he does that because of his childhood and how he was alone a lot. but him just randomly falling in love with rinoa felt too forced to me
