He's smitten with Rinoa from the moment he meets her (Quistis immediately picks up on it, too) so it's not really sudden. He just doesn't really know how to handle it more than anything else.

And yes, the trajectory of the game changes once the main villain gets involved. That tends to happen. FFVII is a totally different game once Sephiroth shows up and you leave Midgar, too.

also I've been keeping a record of the battle music and boss music in the FF series from best to worst. as of now, I've played 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. not gonna include tactics since there's multiple battle themes there and the game isn't really made to have catchy battle themes

after adding 8 in, the list now looks like this:

best to worst battle themes: 8 (dream), 4, 5, 6, 8 (normal), 7
best to worst boss themes: 7, 4, 8, 6, 5

heck yeah Man with the Machine Gun so good

also FFT has great battle themes

i just mean they're not meant to be "catchy" like the other games are. the music is too different to compare it with these themes if that makes sense.

FFT's music is good, i think my favorite battle theme from that is Antipyretic since it seems to always be playing when the stakes are high and matches that intensity very well

Excellent choices. I'd probably include all of FFVIII's boss battle themes, personally. Best set in the series.
