I had some instants in hand that I could play so it kept defaulting to asking me every phase if I wanted to play them. I used end turn to skip them but it still didn't feel as smooth as I hoped though.

Yeah thats pretty nuts, though I think theyre treating Legends in this set the way they treat Transform cards? One per pack on a separate sheet.

Wizards is rolling out a new logo/name style combo to all its MtG products. Logo is fine. New font is horrible.

I played Arena of the Planeswalkers once and it wasn't the worst board game I'd ever played.

I'm not really into the new logo. It looks very generic, and I've always thought the planeswalker symbol looked stupid.

Yeah, I agree with this, with the exception of the Phyrexian Scriptures, the wall-scroll art on them has been top notch. I'm getting used to the layout now too, even though I think it probably could have been done a bit more elegantly.

I'm getting into Pauper.

That should be fun. I played in two events a few months ago and enjoyed the format enough to buy into it a bit. I love that I can play with cards that are really cool and my deck will cost $150 for less (and that's the absolute top end, besides maybe mono black control).

Why do people buy into other formats? I was looking at some Modern decklists on mtggoldfish last night and it's just disgusting. The cheapest competitive deck I could play would be $400 on the absolute low end. How is that fun? Forget trying to play a midrange or control deck! A bunch of modern staples are cards that I owned and no longer own and the prices on some of these cards are just outrageous. I know that I'm just complaining for the sake of it, but it's unfortunate that I'll never be able to compete in that format. As an avid card player, I've never had to actually take into account card availability before.

That's okay, though! Pauper satisfies my itch to play competitively and I can play any deck that I want to in that format.

Here's what I'm building or have already built:

Red deck wins (burning tree emissary & guys + burn)
Burn
Tireless Tribe combo
U/R Delver
U/B Delve Delver
U/B control

This will give me the entire spectrum of colors to keep things exciting and there is a ton of overlap between the decks to keep things cheaper. Any other pauper decks I should look into to have some angles of play I'm totally lacking right now?

Pauper sounds like the only constructed format I'd bother with these days, but the scene around here is very small, so it's not really even worth investing $100 when I could just blow that money getting more sweet cube foils instead.

Pauper has always been a self-defeating format at all the places I've played at. It's unpopular because...it's unpopular. Yeah you can build 10 decks for the price of 1 Modern deck but it doesn't matter if there's no one else to play against. But good for you if you have an active scene for it! It seems kinda neat.

Tried Pauper before. Wasn't a fan of playing with weak cards. Legacy and EDH only for me. Never invested in Vintage, but it's not like I'd be able to find anyone to play with.

Im interested in learning Storm in Modern. I just cant justify dropping $500 to play the deck. Im not going to enter an event with a half-built deck, so Modern is basically inaccessible to me unless I borrow or buy an entire deck at once!

Weatherlight finally gets a legit , non-terrible card. That vehicle mechanic is really paying dividends!

I think it's a decent card which is a good sign that Wizards is finally fixing vehicles to not be broken.

But at the same time it's weird for Weatherlight to be just decent.

Its mainly that Historic is a mechanic that is just decent, and new Weatherlight has to incorporate it since its the main mechanic of the set.

To be fair I like Historic a LOT from a flavor perspective. Its just not super powerful.

Historic isn't really a mechanic though. It's just a pile of things.

How good all the things that care about Historic shit are going to be will depend on the quality of the Legendary creatures and artifacts. (I don't expect there to be that many Sagas)

Well, there are some extremely strong Sagas also. Phyrexian Scriptures is a powerful wrath that can protect your best creature and History of Benalia is a useful tool for white aggro. Time of Ice seems to have some potential too. Not sure what others were really great but they're definitely also of value.

Also recall that historic counts for anything legendary, not simply creatures. We just got a bunch of legendary enchantments of some power, and we're now getting legendary sorceries, so legendary cards are not in short supply at the moment.

Im not sure how to evaluate Demonlord Belzenlok. It seems fine but thats an awfully weird rider on his triggered ability.

I think he's about as good as a 6 mana 6/6 with evasion that draws you a card could be. I'm not sure there's a deck that wants him, but he's good.
