yeah but im guilty of that partisan bullshit, the whole "CONSERVATIVES ARE LITERALLY THE WORST" nonsense that's corrupted politics. that attitude solves nothing and only further divides us.

when the government is being shitty in a democracy the people need to step up.

if you're of voting age then you're at least partially responsible for our politicians.

also, i meant that reply on the context of "Liberals vs Conservatives". both sides are guilty of partisan hackery.

Sure, the public needs to be more aware and knowledgeable of what's news and what's opinion or made up, but a lot of folks aren't tech savvy to do that. So they rely on the news networks for their news, however a bunch of these networks like to use hyperbole and exagerate when their viewers don't know any better. Some would even make up stories to push their agenda. They don't operate like news anymore, they operate like blog sites.

But to provide a serious response: Conservatives have spent the last 40 years becoming increasingly Randian: more and more they reject the idea that a society that works together is possible or even desirable. If people feel alienated and atomized, it is in part because conservatives, their preferred policies and narratives, have fostered this idea of every man for himself, with each person's problems being a reflection on themselves alone.

Liberals are not blameless here. They saw the rightward shift of the Republican Party, but failed to create a successful counter-narrative, a framework for opposing this Randian worldview. At times they themselves have shifted right in response; this was the explicit strategy of the DLC led by Clinton in the 90s, which embraced much of the assumptions that underpinned the Reagan and Bush years. Especially in the wake of the financial crisis, liberals have struggled to convince people that we can all get better together.

man this 'analysis' sounds more like empty sloganeering than an actual thoughtful digression on ideology as it exists in the U.S.

I mean the denuding of public services is clearly a thing, but pretending that the ideology they've replaced it with is atomistic seems especially silly since the rise of Trump and the blatant ethno-nationalism it has exposed. the republican party and conservatives in general care a great deal about 'blood and soil'

I blame both equally. Both have done so much to foster this culture of distrust and out right hatred of the opposing sides that the acts of searching for common ground, compromise and discussion are almost completely foreign concepts in politics today.

We all agree that shit is becoming more frequent and greater in number than in the past.

Conservative
holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion.

Conservatives by definition are cautious to change policies, therefore keeping things the same. We just got through with two god-awful liberal presidents and one meh Republican. Liberals are always striving to change policies.

Today, I'd say libs because I expect better of them. They're supposed to be more intellectual, yet they don't know how to work with the other side. They prefer to belittle conservatives, and censor their ideas in hope that they'll go away. But they're just fanning the flames.

This is not what conservatism is, though. A key tenet of modern American conservatism is the desire to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Trump administration so far has been dedicated to overturning Obama-era policies big and small. They don't have any qualms about change, even radical change.
