I like these but they die too quickly. Review, request, recommend, etc.

Been on a Philip K. Dick binge lately after powering through too many fantasy novels in a row. I regret not getting into his stuff sooner.
A Scanner Darkly was the first and my favorite by far. His ideas for a more far-off future are certainly interesting, but I think his style feels more suited for the near future. (Relatively speaking - ASD is in the '90.) Scenarios which still resemble real life, but with certain twists to it which make it worse.

Also read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, The Minority Report, The Crack in Space, and A Maze of Death. All great, and I absolutely love how TCiS ends: humanity dodges a likely lethal conflict with another species by disappointing its leader into leaving, considering us not worth the effort.

Anyone have recommendations on history books? Like any kind, really.

I know that's pretty nebulous but one issue I've realized with my own writing is that, while I do have specific ideas that seem interesting (to me), the backdrops for those ideas is still obscure. I've focused on singular events or characters, while the world around those things is rather blank. Not looking to copy some existing civilization or anything, but to expand the bank of ideas from which I can take things and combine them into something intriguing.

(That, and I've also been developing more of an interest in history in general.)

History Recommendation: A peoples history of the united states - zinn. I read it in highschool, Ive been meaning to read it again.

I just read catcher in the rye and Pirate latitudes - crichton, i made topics about em. As more time goes on, i like catcher in the rye better and better. I enjoyed pirate latitudes as well. I can see how pirates of the caribbean was heavily influenced by this book. it reads like a movie.

next im gonna finish ASOIF, ive only read the first book. Then Ill read the stand and moby dick. After that Ive been meaning to read a george washington biography

That's a book that at one point was on my list of things I wanted to read, but I removed it for some reason. (Actually I think I lost my list of books to check out.)

ASoIaF is great, I ended up powering through all five books in a row. It might seem daunting but I think going trough all five in a row is the best way to do it. One interesting creative choice Martin made was to largely skip the "here's a summation of things" section that multi-book series tend to have. (We don't need to read seven times that Harry Potter is a wizard whose parents were killed.) Problem is that a long gap between books might make keeping everything sorted out a challenge.
