There's no definitive rule for that between men dating men.
Never really had to be...

Unless one of them is an effeminate queen who thinks the other guy is obligated to pay. Some of them have a terrible habit of applying gendered dating rules that were already dumb between heterosexual pairs. It just gets stupid when a guy expects feminine privileges when he's dating other men...privileges that really only exist in the hetero world because straight guys are more willing to give into the demands of women.

Men who date men don't have any incentive to apply that same rule to their dating (except leeches).
And neither would women who date women, for that matter.
There's no possible wage disparity due to gender in those pairings; they're the same gender.

The only exceptions I've ever made about who contributes more for date expenses has been impacted by the following reasons:
-one of us consistently made more $$$ than the other
-one of us had more expensive tastes than the other
-one of us had considerably more costs to pay (like college, insurance, etc)
-one of us would compensate the richer partner spending money on us by giving them something wanted in return (like being a good ho)

Naturally gender is not on that list, but neither is something silly like who's more masculine or feminine, who tops more, etc. "Hetero rules" don't really get put into use when dating the same gender.

Actually, in my experience the one who picked the place/made the date tends to pay. You don't invite your date out for a meal together just to turn around and have them pay for it. If it's a second or subsequent date, you start taking turns more or less.

It's polite for whomever invites someone somewhere to pay for the meal. If this is not a romantic thing and is a bit more casual, you pay for yourselves, or one person pays for dinner and the other person pays for entertainment. If one person decides dinner one time, the other person decides the next time. It's aggressively equitable. Unless someone is playing sugar daddy or something and you've been invited somewhere exotic by someone who knows you can just drop a bunch of money on such casual extravagance.

And this is kind of true regardless of sex or gender.

When I took my Finecee out on our first date I paid, after that we ended up just splitting it, or alternating. I assume it would be the same with two guys.

Or, in the case of a venue change (say, after the dinner they go out to the bar or a movie or something), whomever didn't pay for the dinner covers those expenses.
