what i remember from FF9 is i stole the items for bosses and once mc enters trance he could kill most bosses without grinding

And done. Well, lets see, Esuna, Haste, Regen.
Regen is not so useful imo(auto-regen is godly tho), and Haste is never seen because of auto-haste, that leaves us with Esuna. Esuna. My panacea supply will be untouched then. Good lord.

I should've done this, at least with the flute, I did it with Tantarians mail, but this time I was in the mindset "the next one will be the lucky one". Besides, Tantarian has a time limit, it gets tiresome after two or three tries

Seems like there's a 1/256 chance of stealing the Fairy Flute. Unless you get incredibly lucky, in the hours you sink trying to steal it you could probably have progressed far enough into the game to purchase it naturally.

I tried stealing it once; I was initially just as adamant about not leaving without it and I'm pretty sure I finally gave up. Never again.
