Mine will come on automatically if it darkens. I never have to worry about turning them on.

I just keep my truck's lights on the auto mode which will still leave the running lights on anytime it's turned on. I mean, I can turn them off using the manual control but why even bother?

Newer cars have daytime running lights, these are always on.
