....so why is Aunt Josephine black? She was white in the book.

Also, i had my reservations about Neil Patrick Harris playing Count Olaf, i thought that it wouldn't be a good fit but the man is dripping with evil, i love it.

the book describes her as pale, but Handler (lemony snicket) did want a more diverse cast for the series and he is the author so >__>

Its humor is too light and really contrasts with the tone of the books.

Count Olaf needs to be played humorously because if he was as accurate as he was in the books I'd have nightmares

I really hope they take some creative liberties with the ending because it legit blueballed everyone

All the adult actors/actresses are great, the only painful thing about the series are the children actors. Like holy crap, can you at least express any form of emotions? Yeah the movie version wasn't any better but at least the kids knew how to act in those movies.

Baudelaire orphans that acted like normal children would be way too depressing to watch. It's like that in the books too, though there's more leeway with emotion, I think because there's no visual or auditory element to it.

I have no problem with how the Baudelaire actors act -- they seem pretty accurate to how somebody would behave after having their parents burnt and then having a maniac stalk them from one foster home to another, with a myriad of deaths left in their wake.

I do like Harris as Count Olaf to an extent, though. But I don't understand when people say they like him more than Jim Carrey because Carrey was too comedic. Like...Harris is probably just as comedic as Carrey was. If anything, Jim Carrey was more sinister to me, if only because of his facial structure and such.

I kinda wish I read the books to see this "evil" Count Olaf, but I don't have time for that.

Eh I feel Olaf kinda became Goofier as the series went on and he always kinda was goofy when he wasnt being terrifying.

I mean the dude is a painfully bad actor(who fools everyone anyways because everyone is stupid as fuck) wears the bizzarest of disguises, with obviously
fake accents and comes up with rather convoluted plans like making the baudelaires run laps late at night into the morning so they are super tired so the manchild narcissist principal will flunk them out of boarding school and he can try to adopt them and than murder them for the fortune. All on the justification that he has a theory on orphans having stronger bones or whatever.

Kinda hard to take that man seriously when he is not trying to murder or abuse children or not holding a large knife.

Its kinda exaggerated though arguably true to an extent. Olaf was probably at his most intimidating in the first couple books and slowly becomes less so as the series goes on I feel which makes sense given his role in those books and the way the series is structured.

Though in some ways a comedic villian can be more terrifying. A man that is happy, and giggling or even unaware what he is doing is evil on any level. whilst doing horribly evil things( without devolving Into Saturday morning cartoon levels of singing about doing evil for the sake of evil) instead of simply being detached, running on instinct/indoctrination or reluctantly doing evil can create a rather unnerving dissonance or a sort of unpredictable tension. A villian who robs banks is predictable. A villian who robs a random store on pure whim is a lot less predictable.

And I just kinda felt Jim Carreys Carreys brand of goofiness just didnt fit. I dunno maybe I will rewatch the movie it was a terribly long time ago I saw it.

Oh and its also due the different medium. A lot of the goofiness is going to be more memorable in a visual/audio medium compared to the written medium where the darker moments will probably be more memorable. IMO at least.

The books are pretty goofy too, the humor is just more in the narration than what's happening.

After watching about half of S2, the show is either much goofier than I remember or S2 is goofier. I get the feeling it's the latter since S1 didn't have a crappy musical number.

Both the Violet and Klaus' actors have both improved considerably for season 2. Klaus' straight-man comedic delivery has become really good.

Also the show is goofy but still gets dark. But mostly I just watch it for the dead parent/orphan jokes they keep making.

Finished the series just now. I thought it was quite good. To anyone complaining about the humor, Count Olaf gets a lot more serious in the latter half.

I assume the original Madame Lulu that went to steal the sugar bowl is Kit Snicket? I never read the last three books in the series, so I'm not overly familiar with that character.

I love the macabre tone of the show. It's like a less heavy handed/in your face version of Tim Burton. It's like old Tim Burton. Edward scissorhands is a I'm Burton.

I will say I'm disappointed that we didn't see Esme "cure" the freaks as part of the deal. I remember it being sort of hilarious. She fixes Hugo by giving him a coat that hides his hunchback, Colette gets a robe that's big enough that she can contort without people seeing it, Klaus/Violet gets a bag to put over one of their heads, Sunny gets a razor (she's covered in hair in the book), and Kevin gets...a rope. So he can tie one hand behind his back.
