I did the tutorial quest, and then I got like 50 dudes together and we started rolling on chumps. Had like 4k ducats from question for the bois but I wasn't paying attention and a dude from a kingdom I cheesed accosted me with 6000 knights and I lost everything :\ Because I wasn't paying attention for a second.

I feel like I'm missing something.

That's a pretty harsh punishment for not keeping my eye on my dudes for a femtosecond.

The idea of the game is:

-Build Capital (do quests, steal and sell food, raid bandits). Do this to sustain troops and buy gear

-Either be a 'good boy' and pledge to follow a lord (I think you can enroll in their army as a single soldier too but I don't remember if that's vanilla or in the most oft-used modpack), get your own group and farm bandits, or make enemy of a kingdom(s) by preying on caravans and villages

If you're in it for the long haul then 'beating' the game is probably controlling the whole map

Big armies are generally gonna be slower than you, but regardless, map traversal is a really important factor of gameplay. Make sure you look up the buttons for pausing movement, speeding up movement, etc. There are hostile people both bandits and angry kingdoms; you can't just muck around in a war-torn landscape.

Also always be on the lookout for the 'companions,' because they can level up and gain "party skills" that become huge upgrades like healing troops, preventing deaths, increasing map movement speed, and a lot of other stuff.
