Snohomish County in Washington state has the highest concentration of U.S. workers making airplanes and airplane parts, according to the Labor Department.

Welp, I guess it's time for my home value to start dropping.

Not sure if this belongs here but it kinda shows how that Roseanne reboot is basically just pandering to Trump voters.

Let me tell you something, Roseannes husband, Dan, adds. I wrote a poem for my dad. Then he hit me with a broom. And then he said, This broom will do more for you than any poem. And that was the greatest generation.

Also conservatives: "Let me tell you how to parent! You've gotta spank your kids ever once in a while."

If my mother or mother-in-law ever spanked any of my kids, they'd be out of my life for good.

Positive reinforcement is just the lack of rewards when doing improper things. It sorely lacks. That is absolutely why entitlement starts. It used to be if you do something wrong you would be punished for it and doing stuff right was normal. Now it is doing stuff right is rewarded, while doing stuff not right is not rewarded. That dynamic shifts things greatly.

We ground my girls kid and take stuff off of him and he just laughs and does something else. No cares given. *Shrug*

It is sorta except the "go kill yourself" comments or " you are autistic" or "you r*****" or "I hate you and wish you died" etc are way past being okay because my 3 year old is starting to emulate them because he hears it. And this happens over the stupidest shit like eating dinner or getting dressed for school.

Uh, no? He is calling her autistic because he has obviously learned at school that is a cool insult. I explained to him that his cousin is actually autistic and how insulting it is to her to say such things. Gives no shit. But, I am not allowed to punish him because she doesn't let me. I think this right here is why Spanking doesn't really work that well. "I wouldn't do this because my dad would have beat me for it!" Shouldn't you never shoot up a school because you know killing people is... wrong?

It teaches this idea that might makes right. If fear of punishment is the only thing making your kid behave, then I have to wonder what's going to happen when that fear is gone.

Fun fact: my grandpa was a drunk. He also never spanked because he thought it was stupid, and he literally said to a guy who spanked his kid on front of him "you're a real tough guy, beating up a five year old. Hit that kid again and see what happens." He was also a war vet who raised six kids as a fruit peddler, and all of his kids respect him without a single use of violence. Hell, most of them worked on the truck.

So yeah, if a drunk "greatest generation" type can figure out how to raise six kids to be functional adults who all had families and jobs, there's no excuse for any modern parent to hit unless you are a bad parent.

There's a difference of punishing bad behavior "because I said so" and punishing bad behavior and helping them understand the reason they are being punished. That's why spanking isn't really a great method of punishment. The only reason they don't do a thing is to stop from being spanked, not because they actually understand why they shouldn't do it in the first place. So if they can get away with it, they'll just do it again.

Right, my parents never spanked me, but they knew what to take away to get me to behave. Whether it was tv or video games or dessert they would pinpoint what would bother meb the most to use.

And consistency was key because they were consistent with their application of punishment. Had they not been i might have pressed them on it more.

But i turned out okay with no violence required.

Spanking isn't discipline, anyways, it's catharsis for the guardian at the expense of the charge. That's why they defend it so vigorously, and the only reason their offspring defends it is because they want to do it to them. And to do that, they turn to anecdotal evidence and traditionalism where science is saying "No, this isn't right, this is causing long term harm and we've got the proof right here."

Oh I did want to say Jakyl that it is very possible that your niece and nephew are very well behaved. Absolutely do not doubt it.

One thing I did want to say though is that you have to always be careful assuming behavior you observe is always their behavior.

https://www.parents.com/toddlers-preschoolers/development/behavioral/split-personality-why-toddlers-behave-with-one-parent/

Some kids will behave around people they do not know. Because they misbehave around those they trust to love them no matter what. Others will be good for one parent and not the other. Others will misbehave around strangers and behave around people they trust.

This is what frustrates my fiancee so much is that the kids behave for me/others and not for her. Though I have my reasons for why I think that is.

Oh this is absolutely true. You couldnt ask for better kids when Im babysitting them, but they definitely test their mom and dad to see what they can get away with. Theres some whining and crankiness to be sure when they dont get their way, but it never goes to name calling. And then once theyve calmed down, theyre very receptive to discussions about how they could earn what they want.
