ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A 7-year-old boy died Saturday after his younger brother shot him with a gun they found while hunting for Easter candy, his family told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Jermon Perry, a 7-year-old who was shot in the head around 2 p.m. in the 3100 block of California Ave. in south St. Louis, police said. He died late Saturday night.

Detectives say Perry and his brothers were on the second floor of their home and their parents were downstairs when one of the boys retrieved a gun from another room.

Police say the three children were playing and somehow the gun accidentally went off. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the family believes Jermon's younger brother accidentally shot him while he sat in a chair while playing a video game.

Jermon's mother, Michelle Lawson, was too devastated to speak with reporters, but her god-sister, Erica Jones, told the paper Jermon's brother may have thought the gun was a toy.

(Jermon's father) never thought the kids would get to the gun, Jones told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. They were in a upstairs bedroom and their mother was in the kitchen cooking. She normally hides candy from them so they dont go in there and eat it all.

The paper also reports that the gun belongs to Jermon's father, Jericho Perry, who did have a license to carry.

Firefighters told KTVI that the child was barely conscious and breathing when they arrived on the scene. Perry was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Police say that homicide detectives are working on this case. Investigators are trying to figure out who was taking care of the kids, who the gun belongs to, and how the kids accessed the gun.

Depends on where the gun was and if it was loaded tbh. Negligent homicide is a thing

How do you not keep your gun locked up when you have a 7 year old and a 5 year old?

The gun owner is always liable for what happens with the gun. As a responsible gun owner, the gun should have been locked up (e.g. trigger lock or safe) and unloaded (e.g. completely unloaded or just no round in the chamber).

Kids digging in the parents bedroom. Dad probably kept it in the bedside table, dresser drawer, under the bed, or top of the closet. None of those would qualify as negligent. Now if it were just laying on top of the dresser or something, then yes you have a case there.

Don't know if I agree with this. I'm a staunch supporter of people owning firearms, but leaving a firearm that is easily accessible to a child, is putting the welfare of that child in danger. Absolutely unacceptable. If you have small kids, you're gun should not be accessible to them. Period.

Unless its in something locked that the kid cant get into all of those are negligent

Sad accident, but if the gun wasn't secured, the owner should get some kind of punishment.

I have a question for those who know about guns. I've been wondering it for a while.

Is it legally required at all, in any states in the US, to have your guns locked up?

My brother shot and killed another one of our siblings. He was three, and the sibling who was shot was only 2. This happened about 13 years before I was born.

They never found out how he actually aqcuired the gun, as it was at the top of a closet, in a locked box.

There was a loaded firearm left around where a child was able to find it and kill someone. The owner of the firearm arm should definitely be facing charges. Pretty absurd that cps will have parents locked up and kids placed in foster care for merely playing outside alone or for walking to school by themselves, but once they're able to play with loaded weapons it's just considered a whoopsie.

i played with guns around 7 or 8 years old. my dad had his guns in his shop, i would go out and look at them and "play" with them with friends. i got my butt whooped for that when I was caught.

if you have guns and young children, secure them and teach the children to respect firearms. tragedy that could have been avoided.
