http://money.cnn.com/2018/04/05/news/trump-tariff-china-trade-war/index.html

"In light of China's unfair retaliation, I have instructed the [United States Trade Representative] to consider whether $100 billion of additional tariffs would be appropriate," the president said in a statement.

Earlier this week, the United States announced new tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, claiming that China is stealing US intellectual property. China responded within hours by announcing $50 billion worth of tariffs on US goods.

The moves follow US tariffs that were imposed earlier this year on Chinese steel and aluminum, which also prompted a response from China.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately issue a response to Trump's proposed new round of tariffs.

Dow futures fell after Trump's announcement on Thursday and were down about 400 points in after-hours trading.

China is a trade abuser but I don't think Trump's sludge hammer is the way to fix things. This might be good for the long term but it might not be worth it if it wrecks the economy now and has a cascading effect.

Still, as long as the Chinese Communist Party exists trading with China will have serious consequences.

That's kind of the real irony here. If we'd renegotiated the TPP instead of leaving it, we'd be at the head of a trade bloc that can put pressure on China. Instead, the dumbass just decided to rip it up and say fuck it all and now China really has no one who can actually stand up to them and follow through.

The US still has a chance to join it. Also some of the draconian polices the US demanded might not be able to make it this time so it would be a win. However, Trump is too stupid and stubborn to join it.

Our nations are codependent. Like a bad relationship you want out of but you stay in for financial reasons. I'm sure they didn't loan that money out of the kindness of their hearts. Just like when we bought up the banks debt that were "too big to fail".

This topic is ridiculous

Tariffs and other protectionist policies increase economic performance in the short term. Long term, GDP slows, jobs decrease and recession occurs. Trump's tariffs may result in short-term job increases in the US but he is hurting the economy in the long run.

This topic is hilarious.

1. The EU raised a 70% tariff on Chinese Steel just last month, yet not one peep from you fools who pretend to know about trade. Quite hypocritical that only Europe gets to play protectionist with trade imports/exports

2. The TPP was largely opposed by Democrats. Out of the Presidential Candidates, only Hillary was in favor of it (her who "I hate the TPP too was just a lie when you consider the Dnc''s party platform and Donna''s later revelation that they were bought by Hillary who pays their bills).

EU's imposing of tariffs was justified as anti-dumping measures against China. Trump's tariffs on other hand, isn't, and he imposed the tariffs on pretty much everyone with exceptions, making it a discriminatory practice.

I don't think you know what dumping is. It's an anti-competitive thing to do and China knows it as well. They could have taken it up with the WTO but they didnt, because they can't. The US on the other hand, is hitting China where they'll suffer, at a time when they're attempting to bloom their technology sector. This will invite retaliatory measures no doubt and is what they do next that matters: retaliation and it's a trade war, everyone suffers.
Not just USA, not just China, the entire world. Thanks Trump.
