Which might be a decent tactical move but is incredibly stupid strategically. Accepting a pardon is equal to an admission of guilt, meaning the pardoned person can no longer plead the 5th to avoid testifying. So if a pardoned person is subpoenaed and refuses to cooperate that's a contempt or obstruction charge right there, and if Trump pardons that then there won't be anyone alive who doesn't think he's trying to hide something.

No. The belief that accepting a pardon is an admission of guilt is based on spurious evidence, like a single line of a court decision. It'd be easy to challenge.

Accepting a pardon voids your ability to take the Fifth because you are no longer capable of incriminating yourself-- you can't face punishment for the crime.

Assuming he doesn't pull a Ford and pardon Trump? I think he can help stem the bleeding, especially if he can energize the moderate right to get out and vote Republican down ticket. Granted a lot can happen between now and November 2020, but I have a hard time seeing how right this second Republicans maintain control of much of anything on a federal level. (They'll still have plenty of state legislatures and governorships, though.)

Granted a lot can happen between now and November 2020, but I have a hard time seeing how right this second Republicans maintain control of much of anything on a federal level.

I think they could keep total control, actually (not likely, but not outside of the realm of possibility)

In 2018 the GOP is basically guaranteed to lose a large number of seats in the House, but they could still manage to keep control of the chamber. And then I think it's more likely than not that they gain seats in the Senate just because of how shitty the map is for Democrats.

Then in 2020, Trump could still win (especially if the Democratic primary is really contentious again and the economy remains good). There are a lot of GOP seats up in the Senate, but a lot are in states that are pretty red; in highly partisan times it's probably going to be pretty hard for Democrats to win those seats against incumbents. If the GOP pad their majority in 2018, the Dems might not be able to flip it even in 2020.

That said, I think the most likely outcome is Dems taking the House + losing 0-2 seats in the Senate and then getting the presidency in 2020.

I think in the House that Republicans have a 21 seat advantage. And that they are projected to lose 8 seats right now. With another 17 elections being toss ups (2 are dem seats). That means dems have to retain those 2 seats and win 13 more of the 15 elections. (I believe this is what I last saw). That is a mighty tall task.

The Senate is worse with having to retain the seats and gain 2 Republican seats despite only a small portion of republican seats being up for election.
