The movie sucked, but at the end of the day it was one bad movie.

Maybe this is all just a long con to make Holiday Special no longer the worst Star Wars, then finally release it on home video.

Looks like the guy did the stabbing motion and she just didn't react to it. It was probably just easier to edit it out rather than reshoot the scene. It was probably intended that she take a few non fatal shots throughout the fight.

And no, there's no defense for it. They should have cut the entire interaction out. And there's zero possibility that it just got lost in the chaos, watch the fucking clip, it is egregious. It's insulting.

Like, for basic stabbing and blocking if you have a basic knowledge of melee combat you can make use of it

It's poor editing independent of Rey factually being a Mary Sue. I don't think Rey "in-universe" has a magical aura of weapon-be-gone. That's ridiculous. That said, shanking the piss out of her would have gone a long way to addressing that issue. A deus ex machina on her bleeding out body would help her case more than a fucking eraser.

But it's poor editing that provides an aesthetic to the Mary Sue criticism. Again though, cut that entire interaction out, I can't imagine there isn't a better way to cut it.

Bruh. I think TLJ is a dumpster fire and dont even think this is worth caring about in the grand scheme of things.

Its like cocomplaining an actor changed pants inbetween cuts. Its stupid, but far from a gaping plot hole that destroys the story's narrative.

I came in here expecting to have missed some important piece of TFA lore that explained Rey couldnt have survived. Not that some editor messed up a knife count. >_>

The reason it was edited it was almost certainly because it was a missed flub in choreography that they fixed in post-production. Mediocre movies having bad editing isn't some massive revelation.

Well, yeah. What would actually have happened is the brief scene where she got cut would've been cut since that's an actual injury as a result of the fight and this made her weaker.

People have a terrible understanding of what a "Mary Sue" is. The case to make one is so hugely circumstantial and hefty and it's based way less in what directly happens to the characters or what their abilities are and has more to do with how they interact with the world that they inhabit in terms of themes or consequences as a result of what they do.

That's because the term originated from fanfiction material and fanfiction self-inserts (which have a lot of overlap) tend to follow a pattern of narcissism on the part of the author. A good example from the ST is probably Rey fixing a broken aspect of the Falcon easily, for instance, when its long-term pilot couldn't. Overpowered abilities are usually an extension of this, but there's typically groundwork that lays the case out for a character being a Mary Sue external to their abilities.

No-selling a stab might be an element (depending on the context of the scene) but that's clearly not the intention of the director because no reference to it ever comes up and the OP's best attempt to sell that idea is from an extremely hard-to-catch two second blip.
