Ms Thompson had lived with him for 42 years before his death in 2017.

.....

Judge Jarman ruled that Mr Hodge failed to meet his responsibilities to his long-term partner, and he awarded Ms Thompson a cottage on the estate worth 225,000.

She will also receive almost 190,000 to pay for the refurbishment of the cottage and to provide her with financial support.

Fair, next

Any judge is going to knock that crap out of his courtroom. "She'll be fine" with a couple grand when you're worth millions isn't gonna happen. She could even sue the estate. Caregivers aren't cheap.

There aren't really enough details to understand if this is "fair, next" or not.

Did she own anything there? I mean I'd think you can't give away someone else's shit because it was on your land when you died.

Additionally, it's not as though he left everything to his cat. He named two caregivers as the inheritors. I assume that they will probably appeal the ruling.

Also I can't see anything that mentions his total worth. If he had like half a billion pounds then the fact that his wife is getting like a few hundred thousand is meaningless to me.

I don't think they were married. Ergo, I don't understand what his 'responsibility' to her is.

Then again, it is Europe, and they hate the idea of ownership.

I didnt read the details, but in America the wife is entitled to a share even if the husband tries to write her out of the will. The entitlement is different depending on the number of children and the state. But you cannot fully exclude your wife from inheritance.

They aren't pointless, it's just that the last requests of dead men don't supersede laws and legal precedent.

In this case, I thoroughly agree because it was in the spirit of the original will-he expected her to be comfortable on her own but wasn't and by the sounds of it, she stuck it out with a mean old bastard so good fer her.
The wife getting $ after death isn't generally bad imho-the worst situation is alimony, get a job and move on with your life, people. I'm surprised feminism as a whole isn't taking more notice of that sort of thing.
