fun gameplay

memorable boss battles

intricate and often crazy plot that crosses multiple genres and has been fleshed out over 20 years

very meme-able

franchise was established at just the right time to be influential

franchise was established in 99, so right game at the right time kind of thing

Dude... I remember when it came out, I had visited my bro, and he put that game in front of me. I was GLUED.

Japanese game heavily inspired by Western culture (i.e. sci-fi/action/thriller movies). What's there not to like.

High budget mostly. Cutscene directing, complex stories, etc. Metal Gear Solid basically invented the modern "movie/film hybrid" game formula that anything not indie or made be Nintendo follows.

There's also the fact that it (or rather, Metal Gear) more or less invented the stealth genre, and up until Splinter Cell was by far the best at it.

Basically, in the old days it was consistently way ahead of its time and backed up with serious cash.

Literally because of cool characters.

That's how it became popular, at least. MGS has remained popular mostly through psuedo intellectuals thinking it's deep, weeaboos loving the "so Japanese" feeling of it and old fans hoping and praying Kojima would stop being a complete nut job and make a game as good as MGS. (which he did with MGS3, kinda, but then completely went off the rails again)
