Why would you say these things, do you want me to not play? Because now I don't want to play.

Obviously not, I'm just pointing out that a 'no war' playthrough would be more frustrating than fun, and it's hard to apply modern morality to the game, at least without a degree of realpolitik. Play how you want, of course, I was just pointing out how insanely difficult you are making the game for yourself.

I mean, the morality issue is why I never even tried it until it was free, since I knew my strong morals would make it difficult to play and enjoy.

Some people find conquering satisfying and enjoyable, it just... it doesn't for me.

Either way I exited the game because I'm now extremely discouraged.

Firstly, I'm actually more like you than you think. I play diplomatic/peaceful in most games where it is possible. It's not the conquering that is what makes me feel good, it's creating a solid kingdom that can protect its people. I play incredibly tolerate, with faiths from all over the place and all different cultures in my council and I get women's rights hundreds of years before they were historically. In fact, in one game, I was Khagan of Russia, and among my lesser Khans were Suomensko, Muslims, Germanics, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, and Tengri.

Second, don't let me discourage you; play the game however you want. I was just trying to offer you an alternative way to look at things. The game does a great job of portraying what it is like being a real leader; things are not black and white and sometimes you have to make hard decisions. That doesn't mean my choices are right and yours or wrong, I was just trying to share some of my 1,000 hours of experience.

I apologize, though. The last thing I want to do is discourage you from playing the game. I'm sure you can find a way, if that is how you want to play.

Wow... that's actually really cool. And I guess it is a nice way to look at it. Still not my favorite thing, but there is a logic to it that I can't really argue with it. Sometimes you have to go through the bad to get to the better on the other side.

Haha the key is to send in a smaller unit to build a fort first then when the fort is built move your army in.

On the topic of morality in this game, I always play benevolently for the most part. In fact, usually when I play Ireland I try to keep tabs on the dynasties that own land I took from so I can either give them their county back someday or give them a barony in their land.

But yeah, there are good aspects of consolidating land and if you want headcanon, just remember that if you dont unite the land its going to be ruled by the English, Welsh, or Scots soon enough rather than a land of Irish ruled by Irish. Or use head canon and think you need to protect all these women being treated badly all over the world. There are definitely way to justify war in a positive way

I feel like if I'm going to be warring anyway I should look into if I'm able to in my original save, where I had put a lot into construction of things that got me more ready for it. Of course, other places nearby could be even more ready, so that's why I'd just look.

Then again there's also a ton of baggage over there.

Where are all these tanistry votes for other people coming from when I only have one vassal? There is two more votes than there should be.

I tried giving my goal tanist a vassalage in a city but that seemed to have disqualified her.

Like, you gave her a city? If so, you turned a feudal-type character into a republic-type, and that always makes things messy. I can't really suggest how to fix it either, as that was a mistake I made ages ago and never really "learned." I just learned not to do it lol. Hopefully someone else can help you out.

As for tanistry, I think when you're just a count/chief or high chief, your mayors and bishops also vote. If you go to the inheritance screen, can you hover your cursor over the number of votes to see who is voting for who?

I might have made the worst mistake in multiplayer ever. I married my daughter off to another player's son and he killed her and openly admitted it, so I killed his only son and heir, but since he doesn't know that I'm the grandmaster of the assassins he doesn't suspect me as my skills are too low, but he has the auto saves meaning that if he looks back at those and decides to look at my plots he will murder me next session.

Yeah, if you have a truce, you can't usually revoke a title. The exception is if you have a truce that was fought over revoking that title in the first place, in which case you can revoke that title, but only that title.

Stats are nowhere near as important as their class, their religion, and your power. So long as they aren't imbred/imbecile/weak/hunchbacked, it pretty much all comes down to whether the other suitor's guardian likes you and thinks you are a worthwhile alliance.

HitTheGroundWal posted...

Absolutely. In fact, most daughters should be married that way unless there is a good shot they may come into inheritance. Fourth or fifth daughters/sons are basically only for marrying off to secure alliances, and that includes regular/matrilineal bonds (respectively) from stronger allies. It also means any kids will not be of your house, which means they are less likely to have carry claims down the road IIRC.

I can't be certain, but I can almost guarantee that Harold Hardrada conquered England, then made it his primary title. In 1066, England starts out in a three way war between themselves, William the Conqueror/Bastard of Normandy (who had a claim and was legendarily descended from the Viking Rollo, who was given Normandy by the King of Francia) and Harold Hardrada (a Norse invader whose name literally means Harold Hard-Ruler). Historically, William won (thus changing form William the Bastard to William the Conqueror) and imposed Norman rule (which, coincidentally, is where we get most of the modern English place names from, and also where the novel Ivanhoe was set).

Now I'm confused about how the line of succession works, since I'd sworn my husband was next in line for a county and the first in line guy died but he didn't get it, it went to someone else and the list looked pretty different, so I went back and checked and I was right, it was him.

So I guess it means that if you have A, B, C and D in the line, and A dies, it doesn't go to A, it goes to A's kid instead of B? That... wouldn't seem to leave much point for the line itself then. 9__9 Wait, no, it went to C. Why would it skip my husband and then bump him down the list? How rude.

Meanwhile I'm looking into how I can decrease my demense size since how much money I make goes waaay down when I don't have vassals, but vassals make it so I can't pick my Tanist.

For now I switched back to Business Focus, and now I'm making almost 16 gold a month~ Combo of the bonuses that do and being back at 9/9 demense.

Things are going fairly well I think, from various marriages and then pressing claims of spouses or the later child. I have 4 pieces of Ireland, with 2 other pieces in the family.

With Tanistry, it's honestly not so important to have obsessive control over your line of succession. So long as its moving through your family, you're fine. You are hobbling yourself over something minor. Growing your economy is worth way more than picking your successor directly.

I reached an equilibrium by putting what is currently the best tanist in one of my domains, thus giving her enough votes to be the tanist, AND keeping my money at 9/9. Been making 16.30 or therabouts a month for a while. Just been saving up for future endeavors and waiting for territory.

I've been playing for almost 150 years so I think that means there's still like 240ish to play through before the end date.

I'm just glad I seem to be actually accomplishing things this time. Mostly due to having to be more flexible about pressing marriage claims. But I own 30% of Ireland according to the game, which is the most amount of Ireland so far.

You can't change their name like that, for one.

Edit: And I really need a better understanding of pressing claims. I thought once my queen's dad died and inherited Dublin from him (I may have used console commands to kill her mother to make sure she inherited my stuff first to keep my laws, but she had died several times before I figured out how I could have inheritance how I wanted it, so I figure it evens out) that she could press the two claims she inherited, from him, but nope. >___>

Strong claims can always be pressed. Weak claims can only be pressed against:

Female rulers if the claimant is male
Regencies
Titles already contested in a Claim or Succession war
Titles the claimant is second or third in line to inherit

*headdesks at the first one* Why is there no game rule that makes the entire game equal? I mean really. Just constant things getting in the way of my queens. It's seriously ticking me off.

But I think I just need to find someone I really like in a location I haven't played. Bright side is I own 46% of Ireland. If I'm understanding this right, once I reach 51%, I get to declare ownership of Ireland or something?
