http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Omi
Sometime before the Battle of Yavin, Omi got into an altercation with Iduna, a male member of her species, who had wanted to exchange eggs. Because of her Force-sensitivity she was able to defeat Iduna.[1]

Sometime later, she was captured on her homeworld by the native Vodran, who handed Omi to Imperials en route to the Death Star. While en route to the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, she received a vision of fiery destruction and was able to escape her containment. She attempted to flee the vessel by making use of her species' natural ability to camouflage, but was discovered by two Imperial stormtroopers. Although she was able to dispatch the two stormtroopers, by surrendering herself to the power of what she could only describe as "It", she realised that there was nowhere to go, and retreated back into her containment, until finally arriving to the Death Star.[1]

Once aboard, Omi once again received a vision of fire, and was dumped into a garbage chute, introducing her to garbage masher 3263827, where she would feed on the organic materials that would fall in. After rescuing Princess Leia Organa aboard the Death Star, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Luke Skywalker were temporarily stranded[5] inside garbage masher 3263827,[7] along with the Princess[5] in the year 0 BBY.[8] Enacting the belief of her people, Omi pulled Skywalker into the water, "baptizing" him, after she felt that he too was in "submission to It", and letting him go shortly thereafter.[1] As the compression cycle was about to start, the dianoga disappeared deep underwater.[5] When Luke Skywalker was able to escape the trash compactor unharmed, Omi sensed that he would go on to do great things.[1]

Before the Death Star's destruction, Omi would continue to develop in her submission to "It", being able to telepathically lift objects into the air. When her vision was fulfilled, and the Death Star was destroyed, she pondered what she would be in the next life.[1]

The worst thing about it in your opinion is some character or planet or whatever that nobody has ever heard of. Got it.

I'm gonna go with Princess Pan tbh.

A lot. Oh man, such a lot, honestly can't choose.

But, you know what? It's probably not such a bad thing that Disney is trying its damnedest to destroy the franchise.

I hated how the first one was just an updated version of ANH. I hated how Luke, supposedly the strongest Jedi ever (or something like that I know hes strong in the EU), basically just faded out of existence.

Snoke was useless.

This. Like they dont really do anything to expand the worldbuilding and confine it to just such narrow space despite before the banishment of EU it has alot of variety and scope that can be adapted into fresh stories, yet they just stick to same old same old.

That was fucking stupid. It was a god damn tentacle monster that lived in a dump eating trash. It let go of Luke because it knew the sounds of the compactor turning on.

This time.. This time they've gone to far!

9 times out of 10, retcons are just awful.

I think the only retcon I actually like is the one in Rocky III where Apollo Creed is shown to be more than just a hater of white people. In the first film, he's a bigot looking to make an example of a white challenger. In the third film, we see where he came from and it recasts him as a man who fought through poverty and prejudice to become a champion. He's no longer the bigot, but the recipient of bigotry commanding respect from a society whose perception of him ranges from patronizing or apathetic to outright hostile.

Every other retcon, with the exception of one or two I may have forgotten about, has been utter shit. I guess the famous twist from Empire was a retcon since Anakin was "dead" in the first film. Maybe that's what emboldened everyone to think that they could write the story backwards instead of forward.

Now that you've seen what you've seen, let me explain to why everything you think you know about this story is wrong. It's not fleshing out a story or revealing new information, it's just an ass-pull.

I feel the need to point out that

A) From a Certain Point of View is not necessarily canon, so most of that article is specious at best.
B) Disney has nothing to do with the writing/development side of Star Wars.

nobody likes change. there's huge resentment towards it all. honestly, i feel any new star wars content was gonna be hated on regardless if it was "good" or not.

we got decades of star wars content that was discarded and/or kept as "legend" noncanon material.
comics spoilers...
so, I wonder if the comics debuted Sana before the movie. that would be interesting and IF she is in the Han Solo movie, THAT'S the kind of connection id love to see between star wars media. the comics foreshadowed a big heist that involved both Sana and Han Solo.

Yeah, the whole point of the book is to give authors free reign to take weird takes on little minutia of the movie without worrying if it's canon or not.

B) Disney has nothing to do with the writing/development side of Star Wars.

Well now that's not true. They are in charge of what does and doesn't get in. Every novel, comic, or video game has to be approved by them.

Yeah, I do hope some parts of it are canon, like the Qui-Gon and Obi story. Really awesome and beautiful.

Ehhh, everything we know says they pretty much just let Lucasfilm do whatever they want on the story side, and just handle marketing.

That we got this pile of glossy dreck over the potential of a Heir to the Empire retooling. (Which was a 100% George Lucas approved product, btw.)

Could you imagine if the new age was Mara Jade instead of maRey Sue? Thrawn over Snoke? A coat rack over Driver? Writing and story over feelings?

My criticisms of the new film have everything to do with writing decisions, or weird pacing, and nothing to do with Disney's involvement with Star Wars. If anything I'm kind of please they're pumping money into the franchise to make a thing again, with new books, television shows, and comic books, in addition to the movies.

- lack of any world building, sense of scale, or mystery

- characters who feel like they are mouthpieces for a concept (i.e. never giving up) rather than actual characters with their own motivations

- as someone else said, over-reliance on OT characters and concepts, like they're afraid to try something new
