He was racist in the sense that he held stereotypes about certain races. In terms of actually disliking races, he actually tried so hard in the opposite direction that he ended up being offensive.

So there are different levels of racism? I thought you either were a racist or you weren't. Not attacking, just asking.

one can acknowledge stereotypes and not be racist, one could use stereotypes as a bias towards the racism they feel.

I mean, sort of. The strict definition of the term is that you hate people of a certain race, but it's colloquially used in a more casual manner. Like the episode where he plays the stereotype game and has everyone stick a card to their forehead. That's colloquially racist, but not Webster's dictionary racist.

If that made a lick of damn sense.

I find a lot of people I broach with this subject don't agree with that, arguing that any use of said stereotypes is clinging to subconscious racism.

It makes sense. The reason I use Michael as an example is because, while being insensitive to some people, is inclusive to everyone but Toby, a white male.

So you would accept an apology from the Starbucks people on the condition that people shouldn't consider them racist?

How far can ignorance carry you before you're labeled a racist? He's been told time and time again his behavior isn't appropriate... when can you call him a racist?

Let me answer your question with another question

A child is operating a train.
Eventually the train doesn't stop in time and crashes into another train

Do we say the child is a bad train operator
or did he crash the train because he's a child

How about instead of being condescending you take a moment to think why I asked the question. People seem to have different definitions of the word. Some people think that using a stereotype makes you a racist, while others think that exclusion makes you a racist.

Lol wtf. Technically the answer is both but the real question is who the fuck let a child drive a train? Not quite the same as the manager of the office having idiot stereotypes in his head.

The question asks for you to imagine him as a real person, especially since his character is obviously meant to be a Frakenstein creation of all the terrible bosses out there, but Michael has a heart.

Its not condenscending at all. Look up what is a racist and you will have your answer which is no. Was he an idiot? Big yes. Did he believe in stereotypes? Big yes. Was he a racist? Big no. I mean I will cut and paste the definition if you really want me to. This topic was pretty unnecessary since by definition hes not a racist.

he's racist, but not maliciously racist. he's oblivious and lacks social maturity.

I think a lot of people have the habit of associating racism with "evil" by default. mention racism, a lot of people think of lynchings, the KKK and roasting Jewish people in a very unfunny way.

what about the racist who intentionally adopt Brown kids with the sincere intention of giving them a better life, but via means of cutting them off from "Brown behavior" and Brown culture in general. this has been going on since the settlers arrived though. had Indians wearing their clothes, cutting their hair, learning about Jesus, etc... shedding all of those "Savage" ways.

benevolent racism, haha

Yeah he's racist, though not hatefully. More like casual racism borne of ignorance, and he thinks he's actually a paragon of racial enlightenment.

This scene shows him as pretty clueless:
