After Luke dies in TLJ, Leia has a force-dream where Luke explains to her that their time as heroes of the galaxy has passed. The old Jedi texts are destroyed, and the fight going on right now might resemble the one 40~ years ago, but it isnt. So Leia leaves the resistance but writes them a note saying shell be fine and not to look for her. Ben (and the audience) waits for Lukes force-ghost to come around, but he never does. Luke, for all his strength, did not have what it took to live after death. Our heroes find solace in the fact that hes returned to the living force and is everywhere.
