Wells Fargo & Co. will pay $1 billion to settle U.S. probes into mistreatment of consumers, the largest sanction of a U.S. bank under President Donald Trump, as the firm tries to resolve a year and a half of scandals across its operations.

The bank will pay $500 million in penalties each to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, according to a statement Friday from the CFPB. Wells Fargo warned shareholders last week it would soon face a fine of that size, which it will book retroactively in the first quarter. The bank remains under a Federal Reserve penalty that bans growth in total assets.

That scandal was going a lot longer than they're wanting to admit. I had a student loan from them back in 2004, and I remember an extra account showing up. I ignored it until I got charged a fee for not having enough money in that account.

When I called them about it, they were very quick to rescind the fee and delete the extra account.

Wouldn't this be considered insider trading? Maybe I'm confused.

No. Its a buffer because there probably are a lot of shareholders who obviously didnt know they were doing and are allowed to sell their stock before it tanks.

Nope. It's publicly announced information. Insider trading is trading stocks based on information that isn't publicly known.

Eh, to be fair it isn't explicitly clear that warning stockholders means making a public announcement rather than warning stockholders at the exclusion of others.
