The two time machines physically warp through time, and are able to land on the same coordinates on Earth, rather than somewhere else in the Universe.

You place the smaller time machine inside of the larger time machine. You set the smaller time machine to go backwards in time, while the larger time machine gets sent forwards in time, both at the same rate of time-change.

What happens?

Actually it depends a bit on how the time machines work, but in general they create a field around them and within that field everything is put into stasis and travels back/forward to a pre-determined time.

In such a case if both are turned on at exactly the same second, the larger machine would include the space within, so the smaller time machine would be put into stasis, and move forward in time, but as soon as that was finished, it would then instantly move back in time.

Since time is not determined by a chain of events, but instead a specific point in a huge network of energy, and you are in effect changing the equation, it would not matter what time you left from, so nothing would change because the smaller machine was actually further forward in time when it left.

So it would pretty much seem like they both instantly left, one going forwad the other backwards, while in truth, for a split second the smaller one would go forward first, then as soon as the stasis was over, it would go backwards. Anyone in the smaller machine would not notice anything at all.

PS. By second I actually mean a much much smaller measurement of time, less then a nano-second, in any other situation whichever was turned on first would leave, then the other one would.
