Amazon announced today a new service that gives its couriers access to a persons vehicle for the purpose of leaving package deliveries inside. But rather than use smart locks and a cloud-connected camera to gain entry, Amazon wants to use the connected technologies embedded in many modern vehicles today. The company is launching this new service in partnership with two major automakers General Motors and Volvo and will be rolling out in 37 cities in the US starting today.

I don't have a GM or Volvo car, but... I don't think I would trust this.

They also wanted to start a service that would allow them to gain access to your home via smart technology, or some bullshit. Why are they so interested in sacrificing security for the sake of convenience? I feel that's the hallmark of the 2000s. Private companies can keep the fuck out of my personal space.

All they need is a home locker that sits outside your house to safe keep packages while youre away. Why are they trying to make deliveries so complicated?

It's gotten to the point where giving Amazon your housekey is actually the better option than just leaving your shit on the porch for several hours.

Why every Whole Foods hasn't gotten 'lockers' in the back by now is a great mystery.

Its just the way things are moving, truly. More people are shopping online but they still want the immediate gratification of receiving the item immediately. The increase in everyday packages being left on door steps is leading to an increase of package thieves. Amazon is trying to find ways to both satisfy the customers needs while also protecting their merchandise. Unfortunately, the only way to TRULY accomplish both is for the customer to give them more "clearance" in a sense.

And people wonder where this scourge of data protection and privacy comes from.

Having packages delivered to your car trunk is only a good idea until the inevitable day it gets hacked.

I also don't like when delivery drivers leave my packages on my doorstep, so I understand the fears and frustration there. What would actually fit my criteria of getting a package, while maintaining security, would be a centralized pickup location, like a post office.

Amazon actually already has lockers, but the only ones I've seen are sitting outside a gas station.

When I read about that device, I immediately thought of having it, but with no access to the rest of the house. Like a closet outside with a lock just for deliveries.
