I am on an email list of Boy Scouts volunteers for range safety officers and BSA rock climbing instructors. For most activities outside of my troop it depends on what is involve and my schedule before I volunteer for it. Usually I give an immediate response that I am or am not available to help out but a few times I completely forget to respond and the event might be over already.

Having organized events before, I understand the frustration with people not giving you at least a simple "no" instead of not responding. I'd imagine some folks assume not responding is indirectly a "no" but from the organizer point-of-view a definite "no" is much preferred over no response.

Of course here I am the pot calling the kettle black. Maybe it is because when asked to volunteer, responding that I am not available feels a bit shameful depending on my reason(s). Still, putting off a response and completely forgetting isn't any better.

How good are you with responding to emails?

Comments are appreciated,

Thank you

My personal email almost never gets any emails the require responding to.

My work email I respond to right away if I have the answer. If I don't, I'll look into it and then get back to them if it's something quick. If it will take me a while I'll respond right away telling them I'll look into it.

I may wait a day or two to respond because I don't know what to say yet. But I get an email that requires a response like once or twice a year.

Seems about everyone who voted has better habits than me in terms of answering emails. I do feel bad when cleaning my emails and I find one from several days ago and I haven't answered yet. Even worse is if the event passed already.

With my personal email(the one that spawned my other topic), it's rare that I even get around to checking it.

With my work email, it really depends. Most stuff, I try to respond immediately if I know. But sometimes, I'll wait to respond if I want to check with another person, for whatever reasons. The problem is, sometimes if I wait, I'll forget about the email in question...

It depends on the sender. If it's from somebody who personally e-mailed me I'll respond immediately, but if it's an automated e-mail I won't. Unless it's from like Amazon asking me to rate an online purchase, which occasionally I'll do.

If it's work-related, right away.

From my kids or friends, within a day or two.

Otherwise, pass. Ads, facebunk crap, phishing, to the trash.

Come to think of it, when it is a mass email to other volunteers and I am not 100% comfortable possibly leading the event, I do tend to wait and hope other volunteers chime in. Stuff like rock climbing and being a RSO I prefer just being there to assist and not lead the event.

I do not envy my supervisor with the amount of emails he gets daily. I coulda sworn one time while talking with him in his office for a few minutes, several new emails came in.

I really should do that too since I rely on product reviews to decide on ordering something or not.
