I haven't had one since I was a teenager.
Thinking about getting a casual mountain bike for just riding around, and exploring.

Any recommendations or advice on buying?

Good. At least you're getting a mountain bike. Just remember to take it where it belongs, in the mountains. If I see you riding down the middle of the road doing a whopping 12mph, I'll cut it close.

What kind of trails do you have where you live? I imagine you'll just want a decent XC bike. Maybe Diamondback, Trek or even Fuji are good brands to look at. Tons of other great brands but those three tend have some cheaper stuff.

Yeah those are all solid, and tbh with entry level starter bikes a lot are pretty similar price and component wise so in addition to the ones you mentioned brands like Giant and Kona, etc. will have comparable models.

So that said I'd recommend hitting local bike shops, trying different models and seeing which has the best feel for you. I bought my first bike used which can be a good way to get a bike with higher end components at a more entry level cost, if you keep your eyes peeled. Only thing is you miss out on incentives a bike shop might offer like free tune-ups if you buy new from them

Dunno if it's the same nowadays, but opt for a 26" tire. The tubes are easier to find, unless you just order them like a normie.

You a normie, TC?

I still ride a 26er but they're going the way of the dinosaur

If TC buys new he'll most likely be deciding between 27.5" and 29"

Yeah, definitely hit local bike shops. You can learn a bit from them and most importantly get an idea of what will fit you well.

If what you say is true, a 26 inch would probably be cheaper.

i have to find a better way to carry this son of a bitch up the three flights of stairs of my building, though.

How are you currently carrying it? with your shoulder in the corner of the frame beneath the saddle?

If you're just gonna be riding around with a chill demeanor get a beach cruiser. More comfortable seat for extended riding, longer frame and thicker tires. No gear system but once you reach a speed eventually you're just peddling to keep the gear going, not so much input force once at speed

this is the bike i just rode home from work. :D

my lungs are not happy with me right now, but i look forward to them adjusting. my legs felt like jelly when i dismounted at home, and i imagine my thighs will feel great in the morning.

Haha awesome, was it easy to pick up after 13 years?

I need to bleed the brakes on mine and I'll be good to go. I've been putting it off but these bike topics have been making me antsy

If you have a hydraulic brake system, yes ;)

Also dolo you should look into bikepacking sometime. I feel like it might be up your alley
