He introduces "power levels" out of the blue, but he never attempts to explain what a power level of 1 is, or how it scales, so when you see ridiculous numbers like 150,000,000, it's a completely arbitrary and meaningless number. And now there's no suspense in any fight cus you know the guy with the higher power level is going to win. I feel like Toriyama realized that DB was so popular that he can make it as stupid and goofy as he wants, and people will still buy it. Not that it wasn't stupid already, but at least it was stupid in a fun way. Pretty much once he landed on Namek was when it turned into goku vs the world DB Super had a few of those moments, but something about Dragon Ball made it much more interesting to watch/read...Idk. It eventually got formulaic, even down to the various super saiyan transformations...They really didn't mean much other than "Hey, gonna get real strong real fast" I'll rewatch DB every couple of years, but DBZ I'll really only watch if it happens to be on TV.
