I remember either Cracked or Mad had an issue that came out around the time of the movie wherein the animals opined on this very subject, ending with realization of 'geez, we're really stupid.'

To be fair the lions were the lords of that kingdom. In the Middle Ages, most kings treated their subjects like absolute shit. Obviously they didnt hunt them like in the animal world but feudalistic society had most normal people living under very tight control, and serfdom was essentially slavery lite. And it was nothing to be tortured or left rotting in a dungeon for no reason.
