I've never heard that afterbirth was bad. Some of the bosses people don't like, and a user made expansion came out that some people liked better.
But Afterbirth is a super fun game.

yeah, afterbirth and afterbirth+ were pretty great

got the switch controller working and the game going. needed to install a beta steam client, but switch controller works perfectly wired with the cable it came with

new character is a pain to unlock, ha. have to carry an item from the first floor to the dark room that basically gives mom's toenail effect constantly so every single room is like the satan fight with two feet constantly trying to stomp on you. maybe I'll cheese it and reset eden runs till I get pyromaniac or host hat

oh well!

not as hard to unlock as I thought. the stomp mechanic disappears after you clear boss rush and complete the item, then its easy sailing to the dark room to unlock the new character

new character is pretty sweet, has two forms and one of the forms uses a melee attack and getting pills to make you larger actually affect the swing range of the melee attack which is cool

Yeah, he's pretty fun once you get used to it because you can switch between his melee mode with skull hearts (containers disappear if hit while one is empty) and his spirit mode which fires spectral tears, has flying, but is chained to the body (body functions to block tears like a shield while in spirit mode) and has limited movement.

Probably the most different and enjoyable character I've played out of all the non-mod Isaac characters

last run with the new character had an awesome synergy. ipecac makes his melee hits explode things but there is no actual explosion to anything but the enemies so you don't get hurt. also managed to pick up ludo during that run, and it basically just makes a floating tear that you can hit like a baseball with your melee attack instead of actual boring ludo tears. cool
