Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Friday signed off on a law banning most abortions if a fetal heartbeat can be detected, or at about six weeks of pregnancy, The Associated Press reported.

The restriction is the strictest abortion regulation in the nation, the AP said. It also said passage and enactment of the measure has set the state up for a protracted legal fight.

The State House passed the legislation on Tuesday night with a 51-46 vote, Iowa Public Radio reported. It was debated for more than eight hours before House representatives decided on it. The bill passed the Senate early Wednesday with a 27-19 vote.

The legislation bans abortion in all cases after six weeks of pregnancy, which critics of the legislation argue is before most women are aware they are pregnant. Up until now, a woman has been able to get an abortion in Iowa up to her 20th week.

However, the measure would not ban abortion after six weeks in all cases -- some exemptions include instances of rape, incest, fetal abnormalities or to save the mothers life.

What I don't get it is why these red states all want sex to be this... punishment.

On top of that they don't want to tell anybody about sex. They don't want to educate. They sure as hell don't want to provide contraception (to teens). They want to punish you for the strongest, deepest set driving force your body knows (the urge to reproduce and pass on your traits).

It's disgusting

No.

why do lots of "pro birth" people make this stupid argument? if you mother had?, like just saying that wins the abortion argument in their favor. What about the insande practice of denying women abortions but at the same time eliminating stuff like wic and food stamps and head start etc.........? now that's insane. And also being against informing younger people about sex ed and contraception etc........

Only if you assume abortion isn't killing a soul, aka murder. Aka within the Small Government's prerogative.

Which is what the entire debate is over

You wouldn't accept small government as an excuse for it being acceptable to kill babies.

Completely is a hell of a loaded word.

So I'd have to say no considering the literal sense. A mom pregnant with twins 9.5 months into pregnancy shouldn't get an abortion.

But I don't believe in the soul and considering a fetus can't feel pain until 20 weeks into pregnancy (and even that is highly debatable) and is not coherant or aware. I find it hard pressed to see a valid argument against it.

"You're preventing a potential life from existing" as an argument would also exclude male masturbation and no one cares. The "Soul" is just a weak justification to push religion.

Indeed. My friend's wife just found out she was pregnant at week 11-12ish, I think?

Methinks this law crosses into undue burden territory just on that basis, and none of the dissenters in Whole Women's Health v. Hellerstedt were gungho on turning back the clock on the whole right to privacy/bodily integrity schtick.

Most conservatives and nearly all practicing Christians oppose it.

Many even in cases of rape and incest and some even in cases of mother's health.

I'd be surprised if it was only 40 million. I just picked that because its roughly the amount that voted for Trump.

Never assume that because you believe something, it means everyone else does. "Most Americans" can still oppose a process that 40+ million support.

This can be explained by showing the difference between positive rights and negative rights, assuming the unborn deserves human rights, as pro life people believe they do.

Negative rights represent your right to be safe from outside aggression (theft, rape, murder). This is what small government proponents believe in.

Positive rights are accepted by leftists. Those represent rights to goods and services provided by the government. They can't coexist with negative rights, because when the government redistributes wealth it has to violate the negative rights of one group to honor the positive rights of another. In practice, this means that a small government proponent favors a voluntary and peaceful method of helping poor parents rather than turning to government initiated theft.

The fact that single motherhood skyrocketed with the growth of the welfare state seems to confirm the pattern that violent solutions lead to unintended consequences.

I dunno much about undue burden, but I'm guessing it means it's placing a lot of extra burden on women to constantly take pregnancy tests or something? Yikes, especially for someone with irregular periods, it'd be even more difficult then.
