Met on okcupid. Went to a coffee place.

Everything seemed pretty normal until she informed me that she had 81 days to marry someone for a green card to stay in the country.

Too bad, she's smart and pretty cute, but not worth breaking the law over.

She had a student visa and was studying at the local college, but she got assaulted and spent a long time out of school (over a year) to recover both mentally and physically. The school told her she would probably be fine as far as the visa was concerned, but apparently that wasn't true; her being out of school for however long was technically a visa violation, so now she is basically fucked and has to go back to China (unless she actually finds someone willing to get married in the next 81 days).

Very interesting. But sad for her, her whole life and career was ruined by some thugs, who she said likely might never see the inside of a jail cell for it.

How long has she been in the country and did she speak full English?

Counting backwards here: I think she's been in the state for four years for college, then was back in China, then went to high school here in the states somewhere else, then was back in China for presumably most of her life. Not sure how long though, because:

Her english was basically fluent. A minor grammatical error here or there, but never did I find myself thinking/asking "what did you mean?" She was never looking for words or anything like that. Which leads me to believe she'd spent more time in the states during / prior to high school.

Had to look it up, but apparently you are correct. I did not know this.

That said, it also seems that it's mostly unenforceable. Like, as long as there isn't evidence of money being paid to one party, they can't really say your marriage is a sham. People that barely know one another get married on a whim all the time.

I agree, but it just wasn't worth it in my book. I mean you gotta at least try and make it look believable, but it doesn't seem that hard.

Just go on dates multiple nights a week for two weeks then let her stay with you for 2 weeks and re-evaluate it then. I think that's a fair enough thing to offer. If you feel like it won't work out, tell her and just cut her loose. If you actually like her, there's no law against marrying her earlier than normal even if you met under weird circumstances.

"Seems suspicious" won't hold up in a court of law though. Even if they're convinced it was set up that way, if you two were living together in apparent harmony, they are going to have to let it slide.

I wasn't advocating that you went through with it mind you, that's quite a risky venture if you barely know someone. But that if for whatever reason you did it, it would probably not get you arrested.

Oh I know you weren't.

Yeah I mean I truly believe I could pull it off, but the string of questioning and whatnot I'd get from my parents and friends just isn't worth it.

I can't do that to myself tbh, I don't even want a super serious relationship yet, let alone literal marriage
