We agreed to using a portion of the bonus I earned at work to upgrade my TV. Found a decent deal at Target (could've got it cheaper online but didn't feel like waiting).

My current set is a 47" 1080P Samsung. She agreed to a 50" 4K Samsung, but stock was limited so she tentatively agreed to a 55", also on sale, if they were out of stock.

Went to Target, out of stock on both. But they had a 58" for the same price as the 55". Sold!

Bring it home, wife is not happy. Explained everything. Says "it's too big" (first time I've ever heard that lol).

Told her it's not worth it to me if she's going to be angry with it, but the sale ended yesterday. Agreed to return it. Can get a 55" at Best Buy for about $50 more than I spent on the 58". She's okay with this.

So, now I'm returning the TV, only to go spend more money on a marginally smaller TV, and somehow that pleases her.

Sometimes it's not about the money? She may not want that large of a TV in the home. Maybe it isn't aesthetically pleasing to her.

The wife originally wanted/agreed to a 50 incher. So it's an 8 inch difference, which seems kinda like a large difference to me.

It was actually 8" more than she'd originally planned, which is a very substantial difference (from 1068 sq. inches to 1437, a 35% increase in area). 55" was already a concession on her part, and I guess 58" was just too far.

Yeah RC and Fatal were right, she felt like it was overboard and taking over the room. Got a 55" and she said it's acceptable but would've preferred the smaller one. Told her if I mount it to the wall it'll make it stand out less, but I'm lazy and I'm banking on her getting used to it on the stand lol

Girl at Best Buy tried to sell me on native 120hz panel. Passed on that because it was an extra $200, and afaik PS4 Pro and Switch don't benefit from a native 120hz display. Only PCs and stuff like live sports on TV do, no? If anyone is familiar with this stuff can tell me if that's worth it? I have two weeks to return the TV but I don't think it's worth it.

I'd say you caved too easily, then. If she doesn't use the room, it's not really her business how you make it look. It'd be one thing if you were spending too much money on a giant TV, but she got you to spend more money on a lesser product.

Maybe I caved too easy, but honestly I don't care to have a TV much bigger than 50"-55", I only got the 58" because it was all they had in stock and it was the same price as the 55"

Ended up with a different brand set for the same price as I paid for the returned TV, any way.

Edit: I actually think the wife is in the wrong because it's his den, but that doesn't make her some kind of unreasonable monster no one should be married to.

Yeah, I don't know if I mentioned it but the TV I am replacing is in perfect working order. The only reason I'm replacing it is because I got a bonus at work and they were on sale. It's a needless, luxury purchase. Even though it's going in my den, any purchase I make over a couple hundred dollars I'll usually discuss with my wife, just out of respect and consideration.

We keep separate bank accounts. She doesn't lord over my spending and never bothers me about how many video games I buy (disclaimer: I buy a shit-ton of games). But a large purchase like this, or the car I bought last year, or whatever, yeah I'll get her input. Not necessarily "permission". We do share a house and a life, but I'm still my own person and can do what I want. Just have to consider the fact that if I do what I want with no regard to her, I risk having to live with an angry wife for an indeterminate time. At the end of the day, a couple inches on a TV don't matter that much to me.

Oh, it's perfectly reasonable to adjust behaviour for an SO, provided the requested adjustment is reasonable. Vetoing a TV that was going in a shared living room? Perfectly reasonable. Vetoing a larger TV that would cost more? Perfectly reasonable. Vetoing a larger TV that cost the same amount as the intended purchase and would be going in a space she never uses? Quite a bit less reasonable. There's a difference between compromising and catering to arbitrary whims, and this definitely sounds like the latter. At least, it did until this post:

As mentioned above, it's actually 8" more than what she wanted, and even if it was 3 inches, it would be an 11% increase in area. That's fairly significant.
